Guest guest
Radha, I did some digging concerning canker sores (aphthous stomatitis). Sounds like the cause is not always clearcut. Here are some possibilities (from Murray and Pizzorno, Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine): food sensitivities (especially milk and gluten sensitivity), stress, or nutrient deficiency. I suspect that herpes simplex type 1 (the one that produces cold sores or fever blisters) is a possibility. Beyond that (according to Tierney et al, Current Diagnosis and Treatment, 1997), canker sores can be secondary to erythema multiforme or drug allergies, pemphigus, pemphigoid, bullous lichen planus, Behcet's disease, or inflammatory bowel disease. Here are some things you might try: L-lysine to discourage herpes viruses. Elimination of wheat, rye, oats and barley to check gluten intolerance. A blood test for gluten antibodies (alpha-1-gliadin antibody assay). Deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL), either as a mouthwash or as tablets, to support the rebuilding of your mucosa. Vitamin C at 1,000 mg per day A high-potency multiple-vitamin-mineral supplement. As always, please note that I am not licensed to diagnose or treat disease, and anything I suggest should be viewed simply as information to be considered together with your doctor. Guest guest
I don' know if anyone has mentioned this since I haven't read all the postings I received on canker sores. I always used to have problems with canker sores, they used to grow big and hurt so much and used to last at least 2 weeks, sometimes more. On the ER4YT-a list I was told that canker sores are caused by a deficiency of L-Lysine. So whenever I feel a canker sore coming up, I immediately take 2 or 3 tablets of L-Lysine every morning on an empty stomach for a few days and the canker sore disappears. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Hi there. I read that individual aminoacids has many healing applications like l-lysine have. Others are glutamine, triptophan, l-metionine, fenilalanine, etc. Does it not suggest that it would be appropriate to make a cure with a protein diet?. Greetings. Guest guest
I can only tell you what works in our family. At the immediate onset of a canker sore, cold, flu or any other virus, ( as soon as you feel the symptoms) we take 3 echinacea (400mg) three times a day...for a total of 9 per day for two days. Believe it or not, canker sores do not escalate to full blown sores....only sub-surface and are gone within a couple of days. We haven't had any serious colds, flu or viruses for years. We do not take it everyday....only when we feel the need to boost the old immune system. My daughter suffered often with canker sores....only to get rid of one and then get another. This is the only thing that works for her. But the secret is to do it as soon as you get the sensation that the sore is coming. (before there are any outward symptoms). Hope this helps your friend. Guest guest
Try Lemon Balm ( off.) proven against Herpes, the virus that causes cold sores, or tincture of Myrrh. If you don't have these you can try Myrrh essential oil diluted in a carrier oil, apply directly to the canker sore, but I don't think that is as effective. Hope that helps Heidi Scholes .. > > I know a preteen girl who has lots of canker sores on her lip. Anyone know > how I can make her feel better or better yet, get well. Guest guest
Canker sores or cold sores is caused by herpes virus- simplex, NOT the same as genital herpes. Before you have an outbreak, you get numbness and tingling in the area and a sore appears. For the mild case use the over the counter stuff. Campho-phenique is pretty good, use per direction. If it persist, see a doctor. For more severe cases, acyclovir may be presbribed. Canker Sores If this question has been asked recently, please forgive me because I missed it. What I use for me and mine (mind you I'm not making any recommendations for others) is Myrrh Essential Oil, a drop on the fingertip and dabbed directly on the sore. They normally heal up overnite. That's what we use for any 'in the mouth' sore... sore gums, canker sores, etc. but...you said on the lip... it's my understanding those aren't cankers, but cold sores. and what we use for THEM is lip balm with a drop of melissa essential oil added to it... only one or two drops per ounce of the lip balm base. Guest guest
Roxanne, Have you ever tried this yourself? My kids and I get those nasty canker sores from time to time too. I use essential oils for practically everything so I decided to try this one time. Wow - did it burn! I have to say that I would not recommend it to anyone. Maybe blended in a carrier would be okay, but not neat. Though these e/o's are effective against the herpes simplex virus, it is way too painful for me. Guest guest
, I haven't used that remedy because I don't get cold sores. I use lavender and tea tree neat for other things such as acne and insect bites, but I don't know about using geranium or litsea undiluted. I thought blending them with the other oils might dilute them enough, but maybe cold sores or canker sores are too sensitive. My friend used tea tree neat on a cold sore and didn't find it painful, though he wasn't crazy about the scent. I made him some lip balm with a bit of tea tree to use as a preventative, and he hasn't had any outbreaks since he started using it. I guess it's the tea tree that does it, as he used Carmex regularly before and still got cold sores if he spent much time out in the sun or wind. Guest guest
Howdy y'all - Just a point of information - canker sores, aphthous ulcerations of the lining of the mouth, http://www.animated- teeth.com/canker_sores/t3_canker_sore_remedies.htm and cold sores, herpes simplex 1 eruptions, http://www.skinsite.com/info_herpes_simplex.htm are two different things. I have found that goldenseal powder helps with the canker sores, which I occasionally get from eating too many high-acid foods (tomatoes, oranges, etc)- you apply the powder, dry, to the sore, and it sticks to it, and seems to provide some relief from the discomfort and drying action to the ulcer.
