There is a future for this class of compounds. I have probably used

more methylglyoxal than anyone on the planet other than Manju

Ray. Methylglyoxal is the only treatment that Manju uses because it

is her life's work to study this chemical. It does have its uses,

but it is not a magic bullet. Other methylglyoxal derivatives have

been better researched, e.g., mitoguazone.

You can get good results with methylglyoxal in humans if you are very

careful to prescreen candidates. Part of the screening process that

I developed is the consideration of other therapies a patient might

use. Keep in mind that all aldehydes are extremely reactive with

phenolics under physiological conditions. If this is not obvious to

you think of the reactions that produce Bakelite. Of course you

would have to include the ubiquitous catechols.

There are so many excellent strategies to fight cancer that I haven't

seen a need to use methylglyoxal for over three months. One has to

weigh the potential benefit for the patient vs the potential of harm

to the patient (toxicity) and harm to the therapist

(liability). Methylglyoxal is occasionally very useful and I

personally like Manju Ray, but I am very concerned that somebody out

there will screw up with this med and some FDA-sanctioned Torquemada

will round up all medical heretics. Anyone selling it should put

warnings on the label, but that in itself would open the purveyor to liability.
