Guest guest
I've read about the poor bioavailability of curcumin so I'm taking LifeExtensions 'Super Bio-Curcumin.' It says it has up to 7 times greater absorption and that taking one 400 mg capsule is equivalent to taking 2,772 mg of a typical 95% curcumin extract. I am curious as to how much I should take though?? I've been taking 2 a day although the bottle says to take 1. I've thought about going for 3 a day, but I don't know if I should?? I can honestly say that, since I've been taking these pills, I have noticed a drastic improvement in my health. I've recommended curcumin to anyone and everyone who'll listen(most don't, but I still try). Thank you for your help. Exerpt Heat-Solubilized Curcumin Should Be Considered in Clinical Trials for Increasing Bioavailability Biji T. Kurien and R. Hal Scofield The recent article by Dhillon et al. is of great interest to those working with curcumin. As the investigators suggest, the usefulness of curcumin could be minimized because of its poor oral bioavailability . Data from this study show that only 22 to 41 ng/mL were detectable in plasma even when 8 g curcumin/day was given orally Curcumin levels in the microgram range have been shown to be necessary to show antiproliferative effects in in vitro studies . The solution to this problem would be to increase the solubility of curcumin before oral administration to patients. We have shown that we could increase the solubility of curcumin 12-fold by heating a solution of curcumin in water to boiling for 10 minutes.. ------------ - --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- ---- Curcumin may Prevent Breast Cancer in Women Who Took Hormones It's not only estrogen that can spark breast cancer. Some malignant tumors are sensitive to the hormone progestin. And studies have shown that postmenopausal women who took a combination of estrogen and progestin in hormone replacement therapy (HRT) have an increased likelihood of developing progestin-fueled breast cancer. But new research concludes a natural therapy could help. University of Missouri researchers have found that curcumin, a popular Indian spice derived from the turmeric root, could reduce the risk of breast cancer risk in women exposed to HRT. Guest guest
I have also read that Curcumin / Turmeric is not easily absorbable into our bodies when taken orally. I think that is why some products combine it with Bromelain. However, I wonder if a LIPOSOMAL form, which I understand is a more absorbable form, would work? I know that there is a method on the internet on how to make Liposomal Vitamin C using an ultrasonic tool/jewelry cleaner. Perhaps this same method could be used to make LIPOSOMAL curcumin? http://curezone.com/forums/fmp.asp?i=1554526 I just received my ultrasonic jewelry cleaner from Harbor Freight for $39.99 plus $9.00 for 4th class shipping to Hawaii. Got it w/in 4 weeks. My plan was to make some liposomal Vitamin C for a friend who has cancer. Ordered my Vitamin C powder from Vitamin Menu for $3.94 per half lb and ordered my Non-GMO lecithin granules from Vitacost for around $8.00/lb. Just sharing. phine > > I've read about the poor bioavailability of curcumin so I'm taking LifeExtensions 'Super Bio-Curcumin.' Guest guest
Curcumin aka Turmeric is a great anti-cancer supplement. A little expensive, but not too bad. The Life Extension 'Super Bio-Curcumin' looks very interesting. Says its equal to 2772 mg's of a 95% curcumin extract. That's what I took, Dr's Best brand w/Bioperene. Dr's Best - http://www.iherb.com/Doctor-s-Best-Best-Curcumin-C3-Complex-500-mg-120-Capsules/\ 13?at=0 or http://bit.ly/ciGQJf For a few dollars more, the Super Bio-Curcumin seems worth it. > > I've read about the poor bioavailability of curcumin so I'm taking LifeExtensions 'Super Bio-Curcumin.' Guest guest
My full notes: CURCUMIN (main active ingredient in turmeric) is 1 of the top cancer-healing herbs. Properties: Curcumin's a COX-2, 5-LO, and and NFK-β inhibitor; antimetastatic, antiinflammatory, antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral, antiallergenic, anti-spasmodic, carminative, diuretic, and anti-angiogenic; induces apoptosis, enhances immunity; depletes iron (a benefit for cancer patients). Efficacy w/particular types of cancer: “Curcumin eliminates human tumor cells such as melanoma, glioma, and others†(Chen et al., 2005; Deeb et al., 2004; Dhandapani et al., 2007; Karmakar et al., 2006; Marin et al., 2007; Shishodia et al., 2007).†Curcumin's especially effective w/ER+ breast cancer, myeloma (http://beating-myeloma.org/search/node/curcumin), melanoma, pancreatic, colon and perhaps also prostate (particularly in high dosage) (www.herbalfields.com/c7.html) cancer, and (in dose dependent manner) chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Also effective w/brain (www.brain-treatments.net) and esophageal (www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/168987.php; www.news24.com/Content/SciTech/News/1132/23a16a18d89646c9b7379ea0b3d43eb6/28-10-\ 2009-08-13/Scientists_Curry_kills_cancer) cancer. Effective w/glioma; " Curcumin can cross the BBB. " " Bharat Aggarwal [from] M.D. ...reporting that curcumin blocks most of the mechanisms by which prostate cancer cells survive and grow...`The potential is unlimited,' says Aggarwal….clinical studies [on] curcumin in treating colorectal cancer…myeloma " www.alternet.org/healthwellness/79774/?page=entire " medulloblastoma...curcumin enhances the killing efficiency of nontoxic doses of cisplatin and gamma-rays " (Elamin MH et al., " Curcumin inhibits the Sonic Hedgehog signaling pathway and triggers apoptosis in medulloblastoma cells " _Mol Carcinog_ 2009). Dosage: May need to take at least 3.6g of curcumin to achieve anticancer effect; I've seen 10g of curcumin recommended for melanoma; " [Dr.] Aggarwal notes that clinical studies have found that a daily dose of up to 12 grams (about a tablespoon) a day for three months is safe " (www.alternet.org/healthwellness/79774/?page=entire; for more info, www.breastcancerchoices.org/curcumin.html). “Dr. Bharat Aggarwal of MD …www.curcuminresearch.org… 1 g/day for week one; if no side effects then, 2 g/day for week…4 g/day for week…8 g/day for week four; for eight weeks (can be split into three separate doses)…After 8 weeks, if no improvement is noted, curcumin is less likely to do anything for you†www.inspire.com/groups/advanced-breast-cancer/discussion/curcumin-dosage-recomme\ ndations Brands and administration: Eat it w/fat (e.g., coconut milk or yogurt). Take a brand that contains (bio)piperine (which makes it 2000% more bioavailable). (I also heard " If you take the powdered curcumin, get the straight curcumin (not mixed with turmeric) and take it with coconut oil...or some sort of fat. " ). Curcumin vaseline was effective (and reduced pain) w/squamous cell and ulcerating oral cancers Use a good brand of curcumin, such as Turmeric Extract (www.sourcenaturals.com/products/GP1301/Source Naturals) www.thorne.com/media/Meriva_Curcumin_Phytosome.pdf www.afisupplements.com (apparently recommended by Dr. Aggarwal) Master herbalist Yance makes Botanical Treasure (www.NaturaHealthProducts.com); I imagine it’s spectacular. For info, http://mercola.fileburst.com/PDF/ExpertInterviewTranscripts/InterviewDonnieYance\ ..pdf Liposomal curcumin is available from www.letstalkhealth.com Nanocurcumin's available from www.theravalues.com (in Japan; apparently recommended by Dr. Aggarwal) I would use curcumin, not turmeric, but FYI, the best brand of TURMERIC I know of is www.newchapter.com/products/TurmericForce Indications: According to Block, M.D. (2009), curcumin’s indicated for almost all cancer patients in almost all situations (except for Contraindications below). I would particularly take it at the time of surgery (and for at least a month afterward), since it’s antimetastatic. Side effects on contraindications (see also under chemo section below): Generally “no side effects [from] high doses of Curcumin; rare cases of stomach upset or diarrhoea may be resolved by temporarily reducing the dosage and taking with food….Do not use Curcumin if you suffer from gallstones or a blocked bile duct†Interaction w/other natural supplements: curcumin's synergistic w/genistein (in fermented soy), green tea, & bromelain. Interactions w/chemo: " curcumin inhibited camptothecin-, mechlorethamine-, and doxorubicin-induced apoptosis of...breast cancer " www.cancerres.aacrjournals.org/contents-by-date.0.shtml (abstract 62/13/3868) " Curcumin....can diminish the usefulness of certain...drugs " (Gammill, 10/12/03), such as cytoxan. " While curcumin is a SAPK inhibitor it does...things...beneficial during chemo...lowers NF-kappaB...an important factor in drug resistance [MDR] [www.denvernaturopathic.com/news/multidrugresistance.html]...At least...with doxorubicin, 5-FU, cisplatin and Paclitaxel....curcumin [made] myeloma...more sensitive to...Vincristine and melphalan....reduced drug resistance to Vincristine [in other types of cancer]....increased the effect doxorubicin, 5-FU and Paclitaxel in a dose dependent manner [in] prostate cancer....reduced...resistance to cisplatin [for] fibrosarcoma...elevated liver enzymes normalized....drug resistance in ovarian cancer...reduced....reduce IL-6....cancer cells resistant to doxorubicin were sensitized...after treatment with curcumin. Guest guest
>that Curcumin / Turmeric is not easily absorbable into our bodies when taken orally UNLESS taken w/biopiperine (black pepper extract). >Think I read that the key to absorbing the turmeric is to use black pepper along with it. Not black pepper, but the black pepper extract biopiperine. Just check the label of your curcumin supplement to make sure it contains it. Liposomal curcumin (which I imagine is the most powerful form) is available from www.letstalkhealth.com Also, my guess is that 1 of the best combination products for healing cancer is Symplex C (liposomal resveratrol, curcumin, CoQ10, vit. C, glutathione) from Letstalkhealth.com Leonard
Guest guest
Ok that leads me to a question. I assume this is similar to maijuana. Therefore heating it in milk to make a tea would do it then? Guest guest
I would thing it depends on the tincture. Alcohol or vinegar would be better than powder and would make the powder more bioavailable. I often use turmeric in an Indian pickle. Guest guest
It does work better when cooked in oil but you can also cook it in water. It needs to be cooked to increase the bioavailability. There is a recipe for the joints called Golden Milk. To make it, the turmeric powder needs to be cooked with water in a paste for at leasst 8 min. a fourth of a tsp. of paste is added to milk and heated. A tsp. of almond oil is added with a pinch or cinammon or nutmeg on top. Honey can be added for flavor. GB > It needs to be cooked to digest well. Guest guest
I have a 500 mg. curcumin/bioperine capsule from Best. Do you all think those are okay to take? I'm sure the natural form is always best, but if the capsules are effective then I prefer those. > It needs to be cooked to digest well. Guest guest
Here is a cheaper way and better for you . 1lb.of turmic add 1oz of ground black pepper. take a 1/2 tsp. 3X aday. the piperine in black pepper makes the curcumin more bio-available. Taking it this way; the cost is fractional of that of capsule .A 10 month supply will cost about the same as one month supply of capsules . Also you have better quality control.
