Not enough tests you need more with your Free this low do the following labs or

as many as you can get your Dr. to run. You need to know why your low with Free

this low it does not mean your Total levels are low it can mean your Free's are

bound up one thing that can do this is high levels of SHBG and most of the time

high Estradiol does this and getting it down your Free's will come back up. If

your Total T levels are low say below 500 then do all the labs to try to find

out why your low. If you go on TRT with out finding out it's dam hard to figure

out the testosterone you add to your body will shut you down. You need you

Brain telling your testis to work to figure out whats wrong. You can be Primary

meaning your testis can make enough or Secondary meaning your Pituitary is not

working right.

Ok I will definitely get more tests and thanks so much for your

advice. The last few years my energy\sex drive has gone down plus I

have depression at times and want to work this out step by step.

You really are helping a lot of folks understand the steps involved

and help to improve their QOLife. Kudos to you my friend!

Once I get back on track I have many things I want to do once my

energy and drive return. I love life and thanks for helping us to

improve it!

Your welcome Tom,

And you need to learn about this so when you see a Dr. you will know if he is

doing right by you. So go to the home page on the left side and read about this

and learn it in the links and files section.

  • 4 weeks later...

Thanks

First can you or anyone tell me off hand what is a typical level of

Free T for a 40 year old active man measured in " pmol/L " as that is

what my doctor uses? Most sites mention other units so not sure how

to convert it. Again my initial results of free T was 31.7 pmol/L.

Secondly, I went and got several other tests done on the list from

the link you provided and they are forthcoming. They say first thing

in the morning is the best time to test T.

Note: Man I tell you some doctors just will not test for many of the

things on the list. Seems they just don't care or are too lazy to

fill out the forms...but I finally found one that will test most of

it. Some doctors really just don't understand the frustration people

go through until they go through it themselves.

Thank god there is a great group site like this to help the quality

of life for us!

Hi Tom,

I hope this will help.

In the file titled " Normal Ranges for Hormone Tests in Men " (in this

group's Files section), the document states a " typical " free

testosterone result for a 20-40 year old man is between 15.0- 40.0

pg/mL. (The top end of that range sounds suspect to me, as my lab

reference ranges show 5.0 - 25.0 pg/mL, though this includes all age

ranges.) For the 15- 40 pg/mL range, the equivalent pmol/L range

would be 520-1387 pmol/L. For the ceiling of 25 pg/mL, the pmol/L

equivalent would be 867 pmol/L. In any event, 31.7 pmol/L is

extremely low. What method was used for measuring your free T (it

should say on the lab, or you can call & ask), & what is the reference

range on the lab?

First thing in the morning is the best time to test T for men in your

age range & younger. As men age, there is less variation between

morning testosterone levels & later testosterone readings.

Totally agree with you regarding doctors' unwillingness to test.

However, if you live in the US, you can purchase your own tests

(unless you're in NY) from lef.org, privatemdlabs.com, & lots of other

places. Regarding the doctor's perception of the severity of the

problem, one man wrote: " If we started all male docs on Proscar (5

times the dosage strength of Propecia, they would take male hormone

concerns seriously. "

Hope you get what you need to get better.
