Guest guest
Hedony, Actually, this is true. Cranberries and cranberry juice raises the acidity of the urine, which makes an unfavorable environment for bacteria to grow. Taking it daily helps to prevent infection, and if you do happen to get an infection, it will help get rid of it faster. I think that cranberry extract comes in pills here, too, that you can get at the health food stores. *hugs* Maxine Baker wrote: > I am fairly new to the list, so don't know if this question has been > asked before. Guest guest
Thanks Yes, I have tablets for when we are on holidays but I enjoy the juice better. Trust a male doctor to denigrate it. Now if males kept getting bladder infections............! Hedony Re: Cranberry juice > Hedony, > Actually, this is true. Then my lovely gynaecologist told me that the women's hospital here in Melbourne had done tests on menopausal women and had found Ocean Spray Cranberry Crush - 350 mls a day, had prevented bladder infections in many older women. I started taking 250 mls twice a day, with some trepidation, as I am diabetic, but have had no infections in 18 mths since starting with the drinks. I have spread the word, only to find I was preaching to the converted. Nearly every woman I knew was already on it, after recommendation from a woman doctor. Recently, even my younger daughter was told to take it by her female GP, so has stopped scoffing at me and has had huge success with infection since drinking it. Have any others had success with this natural preventative? And maybe someone in the US, who isn't busy at the moment smothering their turkey with cranberry sauce can tell me what is so wonderful about the curative qualities of cranberries (as they don't grow naturally here in Australia). Hedony Hedony, I live in NJ (USA) which is where a whole lot of cranberries grow. Since I have kidney problems, I've looked into cranberries (and blueberries) for improving the health of my urinary tract. Some good info on Ocean Spray Cranberries is at http://www.oceanspray.com/uti_info.htm Look at all the medical references on the bottom of that page.....if a doctor laughed at you for claiming what all these studies are saying, I wonder what (if any) medical journals he's been reading. I do drink their (Ocean Spray) cranberry juice cocktail when I eat out, but I have found something even better, which I drink daily. It's from R.W. Knudsen http://www.knudsenjuices.com/ and is called Just Cranberry. It's unsweetened 100% cranberry juice (not 10% like many others, and some are 10% juice which includes other fruit juices). I put a cup of Just Cranberry and a quarter cup of lemon juice in a half gallon container, and fill it up with filtered water. You can add some sugar or other sweetener if you like. I do add about 1/4 cup sugar. Makes a nice drink, that isn't too sweet, and calorie filled, and it really seems to help. Since my urinary tract is quite scarred from passing 180 kidney stones, I was getting UTIs often. Since drinking a lot of cranberry juice, it's been a lot less frequent. Blueberries are also good for the urinary tract, but blueberry juice is hard to find. My uncle is a blueberry farmer, so when they are in season, I get my share of fresh ones. There is a line of blueberry iced tea, that is starting to hit the market here, but it's really hard to find. I have a case of it on order. BTW, today at Thanksgiving dinner, we will have jelled cranberry sauce, fresh whole berry cranberry sauce, and a cranberry orange relish, that is wonderful. I know my kidneys/ureters/bladder will be thanking me for it, later. Guest guest
Hi maxine, I cant give you any proof, but i know when i DO get a UTI the dr. always perscribes me an anti biotic and tells me Drink lots of cranberry juice ( i too am diabetic) So yes i think it can be benificial and hey if it works for you just tell your male dr.s to stuff it. :)Happy turkey day Melinda Cranberry juice I am fairly new to the list, so don't know if this question has been asked before. When I became a paraplegic three years ago, I began being plagued with bladder infections, which, as I can't feel the symptoms, meant the infection backtracked to the kidneys and required IV antibiotics to cure. Guest guest
Hi Hedony, My fabo immunologist (who hates quacks and is very sceptic on alternative meds/herbs) told me to have cranberry juice when I got a UTI and cause I am on immune suppressants, he told me to have it all the time. I cant but that's besides the point here. SOOOO If he is saying that it works, then it works. (I had heard of others who take cranberry juice also to prevent UTI's.) That's from the mouth of an immunologist/pathologist/specialist physician with lots of FRACPS and ologists and lettery things after his name! LOL... So CHEERS! Guest guest
Hedony, I have been a nurse for over 10 years and although they use the antibiotics too, I almost always hear to drink cranberry juice, doesn't have to be ocean spray. The acidity plus increasing your fluids help to flush your system and get rid of the bugs faster (in most cases, not always) Don't they make the " no sugar added " juice there? Guest guest
at health food stores is where you will find the real stuff. Cranberry Juice On Wednesday, February 20, 2002, at 06:29 AM, Dawn Thorp wrote: I can not even find a brand of cranberry juice that doesn't not contain other juices or corn syrup. Actually, this is pretty normal. Ever had unsweetened cranberries? They're not good. Just make sure that you get a fruit sweetened juice as opposed to a sugar-sweetened one. Ocean spray Premium 100% Cranberry Blend is actually decent if you're at the regular grocery store. At you HFS, you can kick it up a notch with R.W. Knudsen Cranberry Nectar. They also have a 100% Cranberry Product called Cranberry Concentrate. It doesn't have much sugar, but from a 100% cranberry product, what did you expect? Mountain Sun also makes some good juices, including an organic cranberry juice (really your best bet). Good luck juice hunting! Guest guest
Man, I bought some unsweetened cranberry juice at the HFS, and about died! It was sooo bitter. <pucker> In went the sugar! Now I just don't buy it. I do get the pineapple and black cherry juices. And I mainly use them with selzer to drink, and then only occasionally in the morning. Guest guest
Dale, I think that I just figured out what was causing my attacks. Last night I drank a cup of cranberry juice before bedtime. I almost had an attack. Now we all know cranberry is healthy and good for the kidneys and bladder, but there's something in it that apparently makes my GB active. So now I guess no cranberry for a while. Susie
Guest guest
Go get some cranberry extract capsules, you can get them at the health food store. Take them in the morning. I think they are probablr less damaging then the juice. But if you want to continue with the juice, count it as a carb, also be careful with the portion. Guest guest
Hi According to my naturopath, you'd have to drink a lot of cranberry juice to get your urinary problem sorted out. It's a good think to drink for maintenance if you've HAD urinary problems, but to fix something that's going on right now, you'd need lots. I use Cranberry powder, which is DELICIOUS with any liquid, water included. It's very concentrated, and you only need 1-2g per day (half a teaspoon) > Happy Friday everyone.
