HCG does not raise FSH, and HCG does not drive sperm production. The only value

that

HCG has in male fertility treatment is that it drives the lydig cells to produce

testosterone

just as LH would do. Once the testicles are making their own T, there is

sufficient T in the

testicles for a sperm friendly production and storage environment. Thus by

using HCG, if

you have no FSH production or too little FSH production, you will still be

infertile

The feedback loop for FSH is controled by inhibin B, and this like the feedback

loop for LH

is a negative feedback loop. You can look at the reproductive endocrinology

files for this

group for a visual and verbal description of how this works.

The way to produce more FSH the male body is to increase the levels of Human

GnRH in

the male body. The following article is meant for female fertitily treatment,

but sperm

production and egg production are both FSH driven.

Clomid is often a first line treatment to induce regular ovulation. Clomid works

at the level

of the hypothalamus where it competes for estrogen binding sites. When these

" sites are

occupied " by Clomid, the hypothalamus responds by producing more GnRH which then

stimulates the pituitary to produce FSH. Remember, in a normal cycle healthy

follicles

produce estrogen, which signals the hypothalamus to reduce production of FSH.

Clomiphene is marketed in the United States by Aventis Laboratories as Clomid

and by

Serono Laboratories as Serophene.

Frequently doctors will use HMG to acheive fertility in females. It will also

help infertile

males to produce sperm providing that their testicles are not completely non

functional as

in a severe case of primary hypogonadism
