If a new group is formed PLEASE provide exact instructions on how to join.

I am a bit technically challenged and my daughter signed me up for this

group three years ago when my sister was diagnosed with cancer. My daughter

now lives in NY so I don't have her help all the time. This discourse

means so much to me and I don't want to lose contact.

Thank you!

What about all the great information from the posts, that could be lost? Some

very valuable posts !! And some were written by people who are no longer with

us, but left the legacy of their wisdom. You mention that nothing can be done to

save the information, so we would lose all this, right?

No one wants to lose the information available in this group. But some people

don't want to talk about things that are personal knowing that their posts are

being uploaded to a blogspot.

Perhaps the answer is to maintain both groups. A new group that is private, and

this group. I am sure that many people don't want the hassle of moving to a new

group, but we've also lost members because of the lack of privacy.

I run another group that is set up this way. We have the main group for all,

and then a smaller group for those who needed something a bit different.

I followed the link at the bottom and got to the page. The message on the

page was:

" You are not the moderator of this group. " True but not helpful. I didn't

find a " Poll " or the left side of the page. I vote yes on moving to a new

better protected group.

Greetings,

On many lists, someone has stepped forward and created an alternative

home for the archives. Do we have any volunteers on this list?

I may be missing something in the discussion.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

1) Issue is that the group is accessible to unwanted outside interests. How

will opening a new group stop that problem? I can't remember how I became a

member.

2) for some reason there is no member access to the polls feature. That is

very curious, because member access is the default.

Just before starting this post I started a new group specifically to see what

control an administrator has over options. I may be wrong, but it appears to

me (wasn't immediately obvious how to edit a group profile, none the less it is

there) that all group profile options can be changed by the owner at any time.

Thus all new applications can be reviewed before acceptance to group (if that is

currently the case, then how did the bogus members get in?).

I have to go to work now. I'll go into more detail if I receive any feedback.

Mike,

A couple of things:

1. This group was created quite awhile ago. It was set up so anyone could join

just by clicking on the join button. There is no longer an owner for this

group. And before he left, he did not make anyone else an owner. Nor did he

give the moderators a lot of power in the group. Now we have a group with no

owner and moderators who have no way to make changes to the group settings.

2. A new group would allow there to be two owners and moderators with more

abilities. The group would be set up so each person who wished to join the

group would have to ask permission and wait for a moderator to approve them.

This filters out the majority of spammers and also doesn't allow bogus emails to

join.

3. No owner - no way to change the group settings.

Greetings,

We can run a poll the old fashioned way. Post it to the list, and I

will keep track of the responses. If this is wanted, I would set a

certain period of time for responses. email addresses must be in the

body of the text to qualify, just to make it easier for me. Is this a help?

Before we get off on worrying about " Government being able to see it " , which is

a current but unfounded fear, worry about any other reason because Corporate

use, such as an insurer, is much more of a concern as regards health matters

than Government knowing what you have or don't have.

However, even an insurer knowing is not that big a deal because if you've ever

been to a physician for cancer, trust me, it is in the MIB (Medical Information

Bureau. Even if one has never been to a doctor, go put a claim in for an

existing cancer and try to claim it is a 'new' diagnosis, and they will fight to

the end to show it " should have been known " and that you did not put it on your

application. I suspect most people with cancer, while not broadcasting it

from the roof tops, have no problem with others knowing about it. It isn't

exactly a Public Threat as is an H.I.V. issue.

As stated before, anything on the Internet is subject to scrutiny by anyone so

Inclined to dig deeply enough. The defense? Do not post anything you don't

want known!

Personally anything I post online I expect the whole world to see. I have no

issues with someone using what I say, not that they would. But on the otherhand

if others have issues I would go along with the majority and support whatever

everyone decides. When it comes to the internet no such thing as private,

especially when it comes to Government being able to see it. To be honest at

first I didnt realize this group was private, and posted something in another

cancer group. After I found that out I removed it, and havent done it since. Let

the majority decide, I will go with the flow! This group is to important to me.

:) All the best,

Mike

Hi, moderator,

-owner wrote:

That is fine. All they need to do is go from hotmail or such with a

pseudonym. That is as far as it can be protected. I absolutely

understand that lots of people have worries about all kinds of

consequences from such information being publicly accessible. But it is

publicly accessible as soon as it is sent anywhere on the blogs etc.

unless by invitation only. It is also " privately " accessible as soon as

it goes through the internet. The only way to protect it to some degree

is anonymity, but even that is traceable to our masters and their

organizations, and most likely hackers, if interested. There is no

privacy on the internet, which is exactly why I personally do not even

bother with masking my own identity.

Because it defies to a great degree the purpose. It is like standing on

a gas and brake pedal at once. Most people here have enjoyed a free

access to this group without the hindrance of special access and I am

sure that for some, having the ready access to the information at least

helped them to make crucial decisions and hopefully right ones.

There are people out there who have difficulties mastering complexities

of restricted access on sites and there are people assuming that

restricted groups are for " experts " . There are a lot of people who are

pressed for time and do not bother with restricted groups and

information contained thereof. Those people will be shut off.

> Even though this is a moderated group and a moderator decides if his

That is more than fair. The group would go to weeds, if that were not

done and at least most off us [i do] appreciate the time and effort you

are putting into it. That is not a restriction to information, just the

contrary, it makes it less of a pain to get to the substantial.

> There are 3,500 members of . Many are spammers - the

> moderators delete those posts. Some are people who are praying on

That is unavoidable. We all have to make our decisions how we handle

information and others. As difficult as it may be to not grab at wrong

straws while sinking, it is up to every individual to decide, which

information and who may, or may not be indeed helpful. No one will do it

for us and a restricted access will not do it either.

That is their choice.

That is very appreciated but, is it the majority already in this boat,

or is it the majority at large?

With kind regards, Slavek.

I wouldn't want to join if it wasn't a group just like this one.

What would stop the information thief from joining the new group and still

posting everything? Do you know who it is? I might have missed that piece of

information. Even if you know who it is, they can join under an alias.

It's very hard to control these things.

I don't understand what is going on there - were they just uploading ALL of the

posts here to that blog? That's what it looks like, just complete copies of

everything that was posted here. I can't read the owner's name, it looks

foreign. They even uploaded the Invasion of Privacy post - perhaps this person

does not even read English and doesn't realize that he uploaded an indictment of

his own blog?

I think we should submit a complaint to Blogger and demand that this blog be

taken down immediately. The content of the blog does not belong to him and he

is in violation of Blogger's TOA. I'm guessing this was their way of generating

content and possibly income by just stealing content and therefore getting

traffic to his blog.

We should also submit a complaint to Google Adsense, since I see he has ads for

them on that blog as well. They will withhold any payments belonging to him for

stolen content!

If we all do this, he will definitely be taken down and subjected to loss of

whatever money he has earned on this.

Now that I took a look at what you were referring to, I am very angry!

I've calmed down now, lol. I read a bit more and it appears that this person is

using some type of " auto-blogging " software that automatically grabs our posts

and uploads them to his blog. I found a few sites - mostly all from India -

that offer this software and tout the features of it. That blog is most likely

not monitored, but what happens is that he also gets to put Google ads on it and

reap the rewards of the hits. I don't know how many he has, but he picked a

popular topic, so over time he could earn a little money, especially if he has

several of these types of auto blogs. Great catch on spotting him, it looks

like people with Wordpress also have the capability to autoblog.

Blogger has it setup so they're not liable for much of anything at all! They've

hidden behind their TOS and I couldn't find anything that really addressed

stealing this type of content. I searched their Help forums and found others

complaining about the same thing, and they had to feel their way through it with

no help from Blogger or Wordpress. They were able to get the ads stopped

though.

Our information is helpful to others, but now I need to change my username

because it is my real name and I do not want it to be that accessible. So if we

start a new group, I'll keep that in mind. Matter of fact, now I'm going to go

back through all of my and change my username. What I resent is

people using our information to make money, and that is what this guy is doing.

He's not trying to share our information with the world to help anybody, he's

doing it just for the ad revenue, its a lazy way to make money without having to

write a word, just steal others information, slap some ads on it and make money

from the traffic. That's what I resent.

I vote for starting a new group so that we can have actual administrators,

that's very important. Is there a way to lock this group from accepting new

members but continue to let registered members come here to read as necessary?
