Guest guest Posted March 9, 2009 Report Share Posted March 9, 2009 Dear Forum, The Global Science Academy (GSA), Basti (UP), India organized celebrations on International Women’s Day on March 08, 2009, at its headquarters in Basti which focused on gender equality including women access to education and information, sexual and reproductive health services, female-controlled prevention methods like female condom and vaginal microbicide, and prevention of mother- to -child transmission On the occasion, Secretary & CEO of the Global Science Academy Dr. Anil Pratap Singh said that women face high degree of human rights abuses and discrimination in Indian society and in the context of fight against HIV/AIDS prevention efforts are largely under control of men. He further said that 38% of all HIV infections belong to women and 75% of new infections were acquired from a spouse or regular sex-partner which indicated male irresponsibility in sexual issues, including HIV prevention. Women lack the social power to negotiate condom use with their partners, also lack legal protection against in-equality and face abuse and sexual violence. Showing her concern Counselor on HIV/AIDS, Ms Sangeeta Kumari said that gender power imbalances and social and economic factor that restrict behavior change are urgently needed to be addressed through appropriate action. Many varied stakeholders enthusiastically participated in the celebrations of International Women’s Day 2009 at GSA and contributed with their praiseworthy thoughts.
