Greetings and wishes for all the PLHIV's social security programs across the

world.

The seminar on the PLHIV life Insurance is an eye opener for the the PLHA's

insurability. Life insurance of PLHIV is one of the major social security issues

towards the PLHA's rights across the globe.

Project concern International with the support of CARE INDIA

is implementing a major program towards the PLHIV life insurance in Salem,

Tamilnadu. Initially the program focused on advocating with the Insurance

companies and with no company coming forward to design a Life insurance product,

CARE INDIA and PCI initiated a PLHA community mutual through this innovative

program- Insuring lives and livelihood.

With the active participation of the Salem District positive network- (SNP+) and

other talug level PLHA networks, the PLHIV community mutual was strengthened

through capacity building with the support of actuaries, Insurance agents and

CARE INDIA's Micro insurance specialists.

The community mutual was named as JEEVODHAYAM, a community based Micro life

insurance product for the PLHIV. This major step was based on the strategic

information generated by the PATHWAY program, a major care and support program

supported by CDC.

In this comprehensive program, mortality rates had reduced with quality of life

enhanced among 2334 PLHIV. Early identification, home based care, enhanced

health seeking behaviour and regular OI management through mobile clinics and

effective GIPA model through peer education ensured more than 97% ART compliance

rate had positively addressed the survival status of the PLHIV.

JEEVODHYAM has 2 micro insurance products for Rs. 5000 and Rs.10,000 sum

assured, with a waiting period of One year in which claims are paid at Rs. 2000

and Rs.3000 during this period. 172 PLHIV have positively enrolled, 135 of them

on ART and 2 of them on second line drugs.

The program experienced 4 eventualities 3males and one female PLHIV, claims were

settled in 24hrs through this community based mutual life insurance program.

JEEVODHYAM, this community based PLHIV life insurance program is a positive step

towards PLHIV insurability. The program which is in its pilot phase is expected

to be scaled up.
