Guest guest
Wow. Thinking of the expression, " Information is your best friend " , it looks like we have a crowd here. However, while it is good to research and follow-up on new information, it does need to be put in its proper perspective and not necessarily something to jump right into. For example, the piece on EPA (Fish Oil and Cognitive benefits), the piece states: " Dangour and his team randomly assigned 748 men and women in their 70s - none of whom had any dementia or other impairment of mental function - to take 200 milligrams of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) plus 300 mg docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) every day for two years or a placebo capsule containing olive oil. EPA and DHA are the two main omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil. " It went on to say, neither group had a significant change in cognitive function. Oh? There was nothing wrong with them to begin with according to the study so what change would one expect? The Prescription Fish Oil Capsules found in my house, which my wife takes, has in each capsule: 465 mgs EPA and 375 mgs DHA and if one were taking two a day they would be getting a lot more than what the 'study' was involved with. She is using a prescription form to help assure purity which has recently surfaced as an issue we need to be concerned with. I say 'help' because I have no lab facilities to test them myself. L. Stoll, M.D., Director Psychopharmacology Research Laboratory, McLean Hospital Faculty, Harvard Medical School uses EPA/DHA extensively in his effort at helping people with various brain issues. This is why studies can be problematic if one is going to rely upon them for their own care and yet we can take advantage of the various studies provided we research more than relying on one report for the basis of our own care. This particular post had a lot of links and can provide one with a lot of areas to research. However one can learn a lot if we have an 'open mind' but not so open our brains fall out. We often hear that for every study, a broad generalization, there is a contradictory study. Many of the so-called studies are nothing more than lab work showing cancer-cells might be killed by such and such. Additionally we read about something today and never hear of it again. Use the " information is your best friend " approach but don't stop when you read something promising. Promises promises.
