Dear friends,

The high rates of HIV infection in women have brought into sharp focus the

problem of violence against women. Violence against women continues to be

widespread and often socially sanctioned or tolerated.

Gender-based violence is one of the leading factors for spread of HIV infection

and needs to be addressed with a new level of urgency—including much greater

resources for effective and evidence-based programmes.

RESOURCES

1. Violence against Women and AIDS: This background document highlights how

gender-based violence increases female vulnerability to HIV, provides statistics

on sexual violence and outlines actions that must be included in a comprehensive

response to tackle violence against women and HIV/AIDS.

2.  Women and HIV/AIDS: Confronting the Crisis. Chapter 6 argues that violence

against women is both a cause and a consequence of HIV/AIDS and makes the

recommendation to promote zero tolerance of all forms against violence against

women and girls.
