Guest guest
Hi Jodi, welcome to this group! I have Crohns too, but mine is in the distal jejunum, a bit higher up in the small intestines. I have used prednisone with LDN when I started to flare some months ago. The flare, that usual goes on for some months - to half a year, stopped during the first week and a half, I can't tell if prednisone as an adjunct therapy to LDN did the job, or if it was LDN alone. Hope that trials will tell us such things later. Except for that flare, I have used LND since Sept 07 as the only medicine. At that time my GI planned to give me a surgery. I used to have obstructions twice a month. Now my GI is glad I don't need any surgery. Haven't had one obstruction during the last year. Earlier, the advice in this group was that you should avoid prednisone. Later, one of the pharmacists using this group wrote in that using prednisone in small doses, as you wrote from 10 mg and down would not interfere the immune system in the same way as bigger doses. Higher doses (than 10 mg)suppresses the immune system. LDN is increasing the endorphines and enkephalines in the immune system, and we had learnt that those two works in an opposite way, which would lead to that one of them will not work at all. This is the fact when the dose of pred is higher than 10 mg. Ingrid [low dose naltrexone] Hi- First PostMy name is Jodi. This is my first post here.I have Crohn's/Colitis and am currently on the SCD.My Crohn's/Colitis is advanced and I am in the process of learning ifI have a possible Upper GI complication due to the CD.Anyway, my latest flare was due to my hubby and I getting foodpoisoning in the Whole Foods Beef recall. Hubby snapped out of itwith-in a week (he was very ill) I on the other hand didn't snap outof it. I know if it wasn't for the diet I would of ended up in thehospital as usual. My integrative doc gave me IV's every day etc tokeep me from getting too dehydrated. So now I am on Prednisone for about 2 months. My last appointment my Integarative doc at The Hoffman Center here inNYC said that LDN cannot be taken together with Prednisone. I learnedfrom a fellow list-mate that at 10mg it is ok to take it together? Isthis true? Also, if so is there any data I can fwd to my doc aboutthis and that it is ok? So I can start treatment.About 3.5 years into Remicade infusions I had an allergic reaction toit and it stopped helping me. Do I need to worry about that at all? I have not been on Remicade for at least 2.5 years.Any info would be so appreciated. Also, I have a history of severe Insomnia. This was due to being onPrednisone for 2 years. I stopped sleeping for about 8-9 months andhad a complete nervous breakdown. To make a long story short my sleephas never been the same. Although, today I sleep- thank the heavens.Should I be concerned about this at all? Is there a way to avoid thepossible sleep disturbance side effect? Thanks so much..Jodi------------------------------------
Guest guest
Hello Jodi, I also have Crohn's/Colitis and have been using LDN for about 5 months now. I'd had two Remicade IV's, the last one 2 months before beginning LDN and when I began LDN I was taking 10 mg. of prednisone daily (tapered down over several months from 40 mg. daily). Now I am down to 2 1/2 mg. of prednisone daily. LDN has helped and never caused any sleep disturbance....no unusual dreams or insomnia. I still have persistent Crohn's symptoms of gas and diarrhea but that is improving, and perhaps being helped by a new probiotic I started recently. Last week I had follow-up blood work done and everything was within normal range except for albumin and potassium being a tad low. I've started taking a protein supplement to help raise the albumin level and if the diarrhea improves, I'm sure the potassium level will rise. LDN has allowed me to nearly get off prednisone. My gastro dr. had told me that only Remicade-type treatment would make it possible to eliminate prednisone. He would not prescribe LDN but an internet dr. did. My GP dr. sees that LDN has helped and willingly prescribes LDN. I don't believe that your previous IV's of Remicade nor the low dose of prednisone you are now taking should interfere with your beginning LDN. Good luck and hope it works for you too.
