Guest guest
Grapefruit Seed Extract and Grape Seed Extract are totally different things. You can read about each on the product pages at http://www.iherb.com P. special6mom wrote: > > My 15m old, who is not growing, has tested as having an overgrowth of > bad bacteria, for which her test says the following would be > effective against: > > Capryllic acid > Uva ursi > Grape Seed Extract > > I have questions though. > > For one, is " grape seed extract " the same as grapefruit seed extract > (GSE)? the health food store had never heard of the former. > > Next, if it is grapefruit seed extract, that is pretty strong stuff. > I've also read in various places that it can *cause* a bacterial > problem if used when not needed, so how is it that it's recommended > here? No, they are two entirely different things. Grape seed extract is an antioxidant. GSE [grapefruit seed extract] is a great anti-fungal, but it actually *caused* a bad bacteria problem here, once the yeast was gone. It might be effective against *some* strains of bad bacteria tho. It is odd, the other two things you list above, are anti-fungals. I don't know them as anti-bacterials. I used OLE for anti-bacterial. OoO is also good for that. > Lastly, I have no idea how to dose these naturals for my baby. She is > very, very tiny, & barely eats many solids as she's not tolerating > much yet. Guest guest
Uva ursi is great for bacteria but you have to be very very cautious using it especially in a young child. Two weeks on maximum. Oil of oregano in my opinion would be a safer try. One drop 2 to 3 times a day. Oreganol is a good brand. We use ole as anti viral ...it never touched my sons bacteria problem. If your child is viral ole can cause yeast and bacteria as the viral is dieing off .I would focus on the bacteria with yeast support like a simple probiotic and possibly low dose of biotin/magnesium. I would personally stay clear of GSE for now if you want to concentrate on bacteria and are unsure of her yeast status. Hope this helps a little bit. Guest guest
I started bio-med on my son when he was 11 months old. When I used GSE, I used 1 drop mixed with spoonful of pear sauce, 1st thing in the morning. Get yourself a good probiotic and start that BEFORE you start any antibiotics, antifungals, etc. What sort of testing have you run to discover infections? Keep in mind that your child likely has infections in the blood, brain and organs that you cannot find on a stool analysis. My son has borrelia, bartonella, babesia and likely clostridia and epstein barr and those are just the ones that either he or I tested positive for. We have also found klebsiella and enterobacter in his stool, but I think those are just opportunistic as he is already so sick with other systemic infections. Guest guest
Trying to answer all here... The test was the 3 day stool/parasitology. They recommened those supplements - capryllic acid, grape seed extract, & uva ursi. Now from what was written, I'm a bit nervous about using the uva ursi. Is Oil of oregano what was mentioned instead? If so, that's pretty foul tasting; how would I ever get that into her? I also thought they were for yeast issues, & that OLE would be for bacteria. I have been giving her very very tiny sprinkle of OLE daily. Once I gave her a little bigger, but still very tiny sprinkle of OLE, & just about an hour later she threw up everything she had that morning. Could the OLE do that? I do have viral kids, & they have been known to react to antivirals. Maybe just that teeny pinch she gets everyday is enough for now? Her doc wanted me to use all 3 of the above together (he never mentioned OLE). Now it sounds like it might be too much for her. Any thoughts on that? He mentioned that this bacteria is strong & that just a probiotic wont' fight it. She's had an infant probiotic since 1wk old, which didn't do much as her acidophilus & bifidus were at zero according to the test. I just ordered inulin free probio gold for her. Thanks again in advance, Michele > > My 15m old, who is not growing, has tested as having an overgrowth of > > bad bacteria, for which her test says the following would be > > effective against: > > Capryllic acid > > Uva ursi > > Grape Seed Extract > > I have questions though. > > For one, is " grape seed extract " the same as grapefruit seed extract > > (GSE)? the health food store had never heard of the former. > > > No, they are two entirely different things. Guest guest
There's only so much I can do at one time. I've got 2 severe kiddos on a homeopathic program (biomed wasn't working for them; been down that road for years with my oldest) & 3 others needing attention plus her. But she's not growing, which is an immediate concern (12 lb 15m old, mind you), & they tell me the bacteria is causing her malabsorption. I have to try to get her growing right now, so take care of this problem. Infection and malabsorption are both major, major issues in cystic fibrosis. Sea salt, coconut oil, and glyconutrients were all critical to healing my gut. Sea salt helps with ph balance and helps with healthy mucus production. The gut is lined with mucus, so if the mucus membranes aren't functioning properly, it's a problem for digestion. Coconut oil seems to generally be a healthy oil (there have been some discussions on list recently about the importance of healthy oils) and has antibiotic properties and also does good things for the gut flora. Glyconutrients have a track record of helping to heal the gut. If you can't currently afford glyconutrients, I would suggest aloe vera supplements and serving combinations of healthy carbs with healthy fats and sea salt. The combination of the three together has had the most powerful effect for me. Good luck with this. Guest guest
I just looked back at the test & oil of oregano is listed but not as one that would be effective against this type of bacteria, so that is why the dr didn't recommend it. Why is uva ursi not safe for more than 2 weeks? Her doc didn't mention... he did mention she would be on all 3 for a few months, so I'm wondering. Guest guest
We knew my son had high markers for bacteria from his OAT through our DAN. We tested for bartonella, babesia and borrelia via blood with a lyme doctor. We tested for gut bugs with a CSA with our DAN. Guest guest
Not growing is urgent. My son was not growing at all between 1 and 2, but he was really big at 1 year old. To get him growing again we put him on an elemental protein formula and took him off of all other sources of protein. Look into neocate. We used splash, but there are several choices. After a while, we began supplementing with arginine, lysine and ornithine, the precursors to growth hormone, in addition to the elemental protein drink. Guest guest
Michele Uva ursi is very high tannin ..one reason why long term use is not suggested is it can harm the liver. . It was a while ago from when my son was on it ..he was 22/m and his Dan Dr put him on it after nothing else worked short of antibiotic. ________________________________ From: special6mom <hugs4Him99@...> Sent: Sunday, November 2, 2008 1:21:55 PM Subject: [ ] Re: Bacteria in baby I just looked back at the test & oil of oregano is listed but not as one that would be effective against this type of bacteria, so that is why the dr didn't recommend it. Guest guest
Grapeseed is not the same as grapefruit seed. Grapeseed is an antioxidant, grapefruit seed is the GSE we referr to that kills fungus and bacteria. Many people here use gse, including myself. Three years and running, we have used it off an on as needed. Being able to identify signs of bacterial or yeast in the child, so that you know if it's needed. Mainly, bacterial problems appear if you don't use a probiotic with it. We have not had any bacterial issues yet with it, but again, we use it as needed. My son and I both needed it for two years daily. Then we were able to use it a few times a month or when yeast signs appeared. We continue to use the probiotics all the time though, they help keep the yeast from getting crazy. My sister and I have used the gse on her baby a few times. When she was 9 months, 14 months and 16 months...each time she had yeast rashes or thrush or what not. For her we used the tablets but crushed them into powder and put a small amount of powder into her food/milk.then the probiotics were added to her bottles. Normally she gets the probiotic once a day, but when she is on gse she gets it twice. I had my sister begin with 1/8 tsp or like 1/4 tablet once a day, after three days I had her add another 1/8tsp as a second dose during the day. She kept her on it for 10 days, then stopped. this got rid of her gut yeast/rash and thrush. Also ear infections. For yeast you want to look for signs, like white coated tongue, foul smelling stools, loose stools or constipation, diaper rash, gas, bloating, fussiness. Caprylic acid is an option. Someone else can probably help with using that. > > > > > > > > > > My 15m old, who is not growing, has tested as having an overgrowth > > of > > > bad bacteria, for which her test says the following would be > > > effective against: > > > > > > Capryllic acid > > > Uva ursi > > > Grape Seed Extract > > > > > > I have questions though. > > > > > > For one, is " grape seed extract " the same as grapefruit seed > > extract > > > (GSE)? the health food store had never heard of the former. > > > > > > Next, if it is grapefruit seed extract, that is pretty strong > > stuff. > > > I've also read in various places that it can *cause* a bacterial > > > problem if used when not needed, so how is it that it's recommended > > > here? Guest guest
Oh P.S. I should also mention that we found giving her a few tsp of coconut oil melting into her veggies each day helped with her gut flora as well. Also made her hair grow, and become shiny. > > > > There's only so much I can do at one time. Guest guest
The test called for grape seed extract, not GSE, as helpful with this bacteria. I haven't got that on hand right now though. Guest guest
It did call for a few antibiotics that would help as well, but the dr is looking at using the naturals so as to not harm her gut of course. I'm going to have to ask him about uva ursi now, although what is considered " long term " for possible damage? Maybe he feels a couple of months is not a problem... Guest guest
SHe is nursed, & eats few solids since she's not reacting well to a lot of them. Formula would not be good for her. We're an allergy family, & she is obviously following suit. If she's not absorbing my milk, then she's going to have much more trouble with formula. All of them are at least corn based. I did try to supplement with raw goat milk, but she got diarrhea; can't tolerate that either. I have to eat carefully for her. But the problem is absorbtion - so we need to correct the bacteria issue, then she can grow. Guest guest
Actually, if your child cannot digest protein, breast milk, cows milk, goat milk, whatever, will not be broken down. Elemental formulas get around this because they do not need to be digested. The proteins come ready usable in amino acid form. Also, please consider that if you have a kid with high bacteria that you too have high bacteria. This is why breast feeding is not always a good idea for a sick baby. I have all the same infections that my son has and I imagine this is true for most of our kids with exception of those infections they catch from live virus vaccines. Guest guest
Caryn, I've been nursing my son for almost 3 years now. He's had digestive trouble since he was born. I'm planning on weaning him soon. He isn't growing much. He has been 26 lbs forever. Do you think neocate could do the trick? That would be such a relief. Guest guest
That may be true, but the amount of contaminants in ALL formulas make them a lot worse than any breastmilk. ALL my children regressed upon weaning. Guest guest
Neocate is good to help a child that is not growing due to protein malabsorption. I think breast feeding is amazing and the best thing that a healthy mom can do for their child. But keep in mind that many of us with sick children are sick and that is why our children are sick. I have all of the same infections that my son has and if I were nursing him and not treating for infections it would be making him sicker. Take a good look at your own health and consider if you may be sick. Difficult pregnancy, premature birth, fatigue, depression, weight problems, autoimmune disease are all signs that the mother is sick.
