Therapeutic Listening

We are about to start therapeutic listening with our 4 yr old. I have asked

around with other

parents and most parents say either it did a lot for their child, a little, or

nothing at all. Only

one parent said something different: she said, " I listened to the CD and it was

a lot of crazy

pinging and ponging and I wasn't going to put that into my kid's head. " Which

made me

reconsider.

Has anyone here either done it, or have an opinion about it?

We did it. My son LOVED! it. Unfortunately we did it at the same time

as HBOT so I can't say for sure what it did. I can just say that he

looked forward to the sessions and relaxed in my lap from start to

finish. He was not a kid to just sit back and relax without some motion

so that was an accomplishment in itself.

My best,

Maggie - WE did therapeutic listening for both my twins, for about 2

years, off and on. IT was really great and if you work with a

knowledgeable therapist, they can tailor the program to your child's

needs. Both our SLp and our Ot used it, so we were able to target

both speech and OT goals through the cd's. Our benefits including

improved regulation, improved auditory processing, increased/more

complex speech, improved awareness in space, etc.

It does sound weird to listen to, but there is real science behind

it. I suggest you do a bit of research if you are apprehensive, but

for us, it was a great, relatively inexpensive therapy.

Good luck,

Ruth

We did that for about 1 year and then added Samonas to it for about

another year. We had great results. My sons vestibular system was

way too strong. He couldn't feel movement at all hardly. It worked

well for him in receptive/expressive language and vestibular needs.

Also helped with self regulation - probably due to vestibular work.

I tried to listen to it once and almost threw up. I have the

opposite problem. I have a very *weak* vestibular system. I get car

sick easily. It would definitely help me if I had the gumption to do

it but I really don't want to go through it. I would have to start

off with much shorter time periods and work up and honestly, I just

don't have the time or energy to do it with everything else I do.

But it did help my son *a lot*. I still pull it out for him every

once in a while.

Hi Cheryl

My name is Sharon and my son did Therapeutic Listening for quite a while and it did work, took him awhile to get used to the headset - I would buy the one they suggest - excellent quality - but when I bought mine many years ago it was like $150. I just bought a cheap cd player, you dont need everything they say on it, no volume lock, repeat is good.

Hello everyone, I am new here and I was hoping for a little help. Has anyone does therapeutic listening? I have a son who will be 3 in May and his OT wants to try therapeutic listening to see if he'll benefit from it. It's sounds good and if it works like they say it's supposed than I will be so thrilled. I am hoping that it will help with some of his behavior issues. I was wondering if anyone had any luck with this and I was also wondering which CD Player to buy. I know that there are a few requirements (random play, volume lock and be able to turn the bass off), but I am having trouble finding one that has these features. Does anyone have one that you can tell me which one it is?Thanks!

Like Sharon we bought a good quality headset but did not concern ourselves so much with the CD player. We have used various Listening programs thro the years.....I sometimes think we have tried everything!! ..lol.. and are now doing the Holosync Solution Awakening. The tape relaxes me so much it almost puts me to sleep..lol..

So basically the features that the CD Player has are not

that important? I actually bought one yesterday that has random play and the

volume lock but it doesn’t allow you to turn the bass off. Would that be

okay? I was going to return it but if that works I will go ahead and keep it. The

headphones I actually ordered from Vital Sounds already, they were $145. His OT

rents the headphones but after about 12 weeks I could’ve paid for it

myself so we decided to just buy them instead of renting them. Thank you both

for you input. It is appreciated.

anytime, but they cannot use it during playing a game station game, watching t.v.,

Danny used to use his right when he came home from school he would jump on his tramp, do his pacing, do his homework, just about anything just can't have a t.v. on or stuff like that no DS. You get the idea.

This is new to me. Do you use it at night or can I use it to calm my granddaughter during the day.

I guess it is supposed to be done twice a day for 30 minutes

each time. They wear the headphones and listen while they are playing, eating,

whatever. They just can’t do it while watching TV, playing video games or

anything like that. You can buy the headphones and everything else but you’d

have to get the CDs from the occupational therapist. I guess it is not

something that you can do on your own it has to be done through the therapist.

I am hoping that it works.
