Legos, moon sand, they also make this large plastic grabber arm that

my son loves. He also loved those hoppity balls, Light brights are

good for fine motor if they are old enough for them,

Actually, you might want to look online at Toys R Us, they now have a

toy category for " special needs " that tells what areas of development

the toy helps. We found this helpful in picking things my son could

use. Pretend play, my son enjoyed fireman gear, construction tools,

toy fire house, castles...

Just curious.  I am seriously considering getting one for the boys and

if they like it, getting another one so they won't have to share.  But

with my two guys, it is so hard to find stuff that they will have

interest in and want to play with appropriately.

Do you/they already have a balance ball (for muscle tone)? I took a pair of

beanie baby boy dolls when I went to visit a 6 y.o. client recently and we had

quite a session of pretend play with the dolls interacting, talking, etc. He

wants me to bring them back next time I visit. Remind us of your sons' ages.

If I think of other ideas I'll post them.

Hi All!

We are at that time of year when we really get to thinking about what would be

fun gifts for and Garrett as well as therapeutic tools for their learning.

Does anyone have good ideas for toys/items that would help with muscle tone,

fine motor coordination, pretend play?

I saw in my apraxia support group a mom saying that she was getting her child a

plasma car. Does anyone know what that would help with? Just curious. I am

another one so they won't have to share. But with my two guys, it is so hard to

find stuff that they will have interest in and want to play with appropriately.

So any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks, Dana

This was more for speech than for the issues you list above, but the

absolute BEST gift I ever bought my kids was a magnadoodle. They

learned to read and talk with this toy. And, I let them bring their

magnadoodles to places where they would not be able to talk much, and

they learned they could write messages to each other.

They are 11 and 12 now, and I have replaced their magnadoodles many

many times, and they still love them.

I bought a Leapster game for my son to help with fine motor. This

machine with monitoring (my son can get obsessive compulsive) has been

a godsend. There is a stylus pen that kids must hold the correct way

(like a pencil or pen) in order for the game to work properly.

The game learning to write letters & numbers has helped him

tremendously. He is actually writing letters on his own now where

before he never could. I think this is a wonderful investment.

Yes! The Magnadoodle has been Ruby's favourite thing since last

Christmas. That was how we discovered she could read. Ruby loves when

we write things on her magnadoodle and she tells us what we wrote. She

will now let me do hand over hand for writing on it.

Her other favourite thing is her Vtech laptop. It's the Train

and she has taught herself games on it. She lays in bed and plays her

games before going to bed. These two things were the best things we

ever bought her.

She's getting a second hand PC for Christmas this year.

She also has this one but wore it out!

That is the same as the one. She loves her computer so much. We

play games together, it's one thing we can do together. She will also

sit at the table to eat if her laptop is on the table and she can play

her games and eat. What ever works!
