I'm going to try the high dose Vitamin A as soon as it comes in because i consider this a visual stim. Can anyone share success stories with this helping their child's writing in the air? Any thing else i can try? We're chelating (round 40) and doing the required chelating supplements, plus rotating food, enzymes, probiotics, CLO. > TIA, > Sherry >

At my house, folic acid was the primary supplement that eliminated this. Other things that helped were B12, B1, anti-fungals, and anti-virals. But folic was primary. Guest guest
My son went through a " phase " I call it of writing words in the air and writing in the air answers to questions and we were worried but it went on for some time while he was learning to read...how old is your son? Is it related to learning to read or write? I am new to learning all this and I am just wondering how folic acid and B vits help with this particular behaviour? What the connection might be? A. If you are giving B12 and/or TMG, those deplete folic acid. So any supplementing of the folic that you do, would be going to the B12/TMG, and not to increasing stores in the body. So after three years of folic, your child might still be deficient. My son was SEVERELY folic deficient. There was one period of several months, where I gave him 40mg 3x per day. This was approx 1 bottle of folic per day. Most kids don't need nearly that much, but some do. How much folic do you give per day? Try giving an extra 800mcg, see if that reduces his writing-in-the-air. If it actually *increases* it, then he would no longer need the folic. Folic was one of the supps that actually *caused* the same problem that initially it eliminated, once my son no longer needed supplementation. Guest guest
Hi Sherry, my son was diagnosed as high functioning autism 4 days ago. He is constantly doing this writing in the air also. He stands next to signs, copying the writing in the air too. If you know of a reason why they do this, could you let me know please!!!! Am knew to all this. Thanks, Lou x > > My son " writes in the air " constantly, like, 98% of the time he's > awake. I'm going to try the high dose Vitamin A as soon as it comes in > because i consider this a visual stim. Guest guest
Hi all, from my " for what it's worth " department: I am persuaded that our children often write in the air because they're taught to by educators and therapists--it's often a first or second step in learning to read/write (later, the " air tracing " becomes tracing on paper or it's taught simultaneously). Why would ASD children do it in other settings or in " inappropriate " settings? Well, i don't know, but i wouldnt find it surprising given that a big part of their challenge is " social inappropriateness " . Could folinic/folic acid impact this behavior? I believe it's plausible inasmuch as folinic acid helps social behaviors become more appropriate (at least it has for my own two daughters both of whom have the medical diagnosis of ASD). Hope this is helpful, Jeff
Guest guest
i believe you are right about this...as a homeschooler i seen my son doing more intense writing in the air when learning to read...he also does a lot of repetitive hand motions that are in his mind re-enactments of fave shows etc. Could it be that our kids just do these things more intensely and repetitively than others. I would like to know how folic acid helps with this and how to determine if I should start him on it? How much for a 5yo? Guest guest
What is the safe dosage for folic acid? What kind do I buy? Is is liquid or tablet? Any side effects? My son is almost 4 at about 38 pounds and PDD-NOS and does this a lot. I would like to try this. He is currently reading sight words and writing them on paper. I have not talked to my DAN about it yet but it has been going on for several months. Is it safe to start folic acid without his approval since he is on so many other supplements? Anything it could react with? We do not currently have a viral protocol in place, but I am dying to start one. I don't know if he has virals, but it couldn't hurt him could it? PLEASE HELP!! I don't know why folic eliminated about 90% of this problem for my son, but it did. Most kids seem to need 800-1600mcg folic per day. Some kids need folinic and some need Folapro. My son required carnitine for proper absorption of the folic. Dana

Been doing this for well over a year, probably closer to two. Before he was verbal (2 1/2)he would be sitting in our van and when the CD player was on he would have one hand held up with the CD # and the other hand held up with the track #, when the track changed, so would the # being held up with his hand. Did you follow that?? LOL When we eat, he " writes " on the table, when we play games he " writes " on the carpet. It probably is part obsession. I'd tried high dose inositol, but that didn't do a thing. I have to go back through my notes to see when i stopped the folinic acid and when i added it back in. It didn't seem to change the " writing " though. Sherry

I'm giving nothing compared to that. I had stopped for over six months, started again, giving 400mcg 3X a day. Recently added MB12 and never used the TMG. I will up this and give with carnitine. I've tried taking away computer time, time-outs, and evening putting his arm down myself, nothing works, this is one powerful stim! Guest guest
My little guy is 12 and verbal - we ask him what he is 'writing' in the air and sometimes he is writing numbers/letters/words and other times he is 'drawing' pictures. We give him paper and pencil to use, plus verbal cues to remind him not everyone writes in the air all the time, but many do it some of the time. We all laugh about it, including him and it subsides. Then he will do it to get a laugh. Guest guest
This reminds me of a hand in the air stim that my 5yo son does...he will mimic scenes from a favorite show with his hands in an obsessive can't stop way. Also we have a stim that only occurs in the winter months. We have a Christmas display at our local park that he loves and for ever he is taking his hands and imitating the position of the various display figures (santa, bears, disney characters etc). He has done this ever since he was 3 and he means to do it...he has a amazing memory to recall all the display in order and how they are positioned but it is a little disconcerting when he is " lost " in a store just dazed walking about doing these odd movements with his hands. So far our OT has said to just tell him that is a " game " to play at home but it really gets disruptive around our house in the winter. This seems related to the writing in the air. WHAT IS THIS? WHY? I am trying to figure out what my child is thinking? On the one hand it seems as if he is enjoying himself he obviously loves the park display...but doing this with his hands all day is not what we want to see, right? So folic acid has been helpful for these types of things...yeah? i would like some more info on results people have seen with these things. Behaviour as well as supps. Guest guest
Just a positive perspective on this. I think many ASD kiddos have a very uniquely set up artistic mind. I have heard adults with autism explain how they see things differently and sometimes in magnificent patterns. They can make patterns and art in their minds with objects like no one else...So it can be seen as a stimm ...but may in fact be ..that they are very gifted. Some of the best art comes from people on the spectrum : ) On the other hand..... until our kids are met with acceptance in their unique abilities..these behaviors can worry us parents.. My son doesn't write in the air but if he starts to do this ..I know I will be right there with you, looking for helpĀ : ) ...Just wanted to give you a little piece of positive.
