Guest guest
hmnmm . . . I didn't know L-Carnatine required a prescription. We just buy it from iHerb. It helps with energy, mineral/vit absorption. I didn't see anything about seizures when starting l-Carnatine. We got 250mg l-Carnatine tabs. I didn't see on the bottle what the 'L' was for. Wondering if maybe there are two different versions? Why did your DAN! want to do this? That might help with your reasoning and decision. noaholiviaian wrote: > > Hi, > > Long time no post. Guest guest
Pam, My most recovered apraxic son (now 4.5) is on L-Carnitine. He did have labs (we did them twice) that showed a deficiency, and we had mild truncal hypotonia. He didn't have any energy issues though. In my research I didn't come across the reference to seizures but we have been on it for about 18 months with no real issues except the following: We started at 750 mg split into 3 doses. THIS WAS TOO HIGH! Within 3 days my son was literally bouncing off the walls, we had diarrhea, and sleep trouble. I lowered the dose over a few days to 400mg given twice/day (the last dose at snack time) and the problems all went away. I have slowly, over the last 18 months, been able to raise the dose to 750mg/day without problems. We did testing about 9 months ago and his carnitine levels are now in the reference range. My advice would be to start lower and ramp up until you see problems. (Max's Mom) > > Hi, > > Long time no post. Guest guest
I started my 3 year old on L-Carnitine about 8 months ago. Before that she wasn't growing and I swear the Carnitine is what caused her to have a major growth spurt. Her body is like a preschooler now. She has shoulders, flat belly and is wearing a 4 and 5T now. She just suddenly started to grow. I love the stuff. > > > > Hi, > > > > Long time no post. Guest guest
Our 4 yr old takes 340 mgs of l-carnitine daily which is combined in the tablets with 12 mgs vitamin c. He started taking it about 2 months ago for mitochondrial support and we haven't seen any negative response to it. Can't say we've seen any direct positive response, though our son does continue to improve in terms of his energy and activity level. Maggie d. > > Hi, > > Long time no post. Guest guest
For some reason, I've been getting error messages when I try to reply. Maybe if you're absent for too long they don't let you back in! I'll try one more time... Thank you for your story. My son has a history of truncal hypotonia as a toddler, so I can imagine we have some residual issues I just don't see (because he is so energetic). Glad to hear you didn't get warned about seizures. Maybe they address it on the scrip because l- carnitine is used with Rett's patients (and seizures seem to be common)? And to the mom who talked about growth: I'd love some true muscle mass. My son has put on 10 lbs since January with the addition of pancreatic enzymes (Creon), but remains pretty slight. I've done a bit more digging since I first posted. I think I'll relax and give it a try. I don't want to see the gastrointestinal problems, so I'll definitely start slow. I appreciate your help. Pam > > > > Hi, > > > > Long time no post. We don't have seizures and I want to avoid them, of course. I used l-carnitine from my local health food store. It was one of my son's " wonder " supplements. It was required for proper absorption of fats, vitamin C, certain B vitamins, and TMG. It helped with growth issues, muscle tone, and language. Guest guest
We started using Acetyl-l-carnitine a few weeks ago. We give about 450 mg per day divided up into 3 doses or so. It has been really helpful so far, almost as much progress from it as we got from B12. It has helped specifically a lot with language for our son.
