Gay prof\'s partner attempts self-immolation - Lucknow

LUCKNOW: Hounded by the police in connection with the mysterious death of gay

AMU professor SR Siras, Irfan, a young rickshaw puller and his alleged partner

tried to immolate himself on Friday.

On Friday morning, Irfan sprinkled kerosene over his body and tried to set

himself on fire. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital and is now stated

to be out of danger, SP city Aligarh Man Singh Chauhan told the mediapersons.

Dismissing the allegations of witch hunt by district police, the officer claimed

that the young man was under much financial strain and the suicide attempt could

have been triggered off by the frustrating state of affairs.

July 3 was the second time Irfan had a taste of khaki when police took him into

custody for a day to interrogate him. The 22-year-old man had earlier stated

that Siras had offered him money to marry off his sister. Siras a professor of

Marathi literature in Aligarh Muslim University was found dead in the apartment

on April 7. The 62-year-old professor was suspended by the V-C after a sting

operation by a local channel which had filmed him with Irfan by barging into his

house.
