Guest guest
Hi! I am Bekah, mom to two wonderful boys, Micah (5) and River (16 months)and we have been having some " autistic-like problems " with our 5yo. He was exclusively breastfed and received all immunizations at the scheduled time except the MMR, which I had read a piece about the link between that and autism and decided to delay that until he was 2...about a month after his shot and gradually as he self weaned from nursing we started seeing some subtle issues. Hand twisting and flapping when excited, facial grimaces and tense, jerky arm movements. He would also play in vary strange ways...just kind of yell and throw toys together in a pile and sift through it frantically followed by the tense arm movements. About this time he stopped eating a varied diet, and his temperamental shyness became more pronounced. We kind of just thought that all these things were " toddler-hood " and our pede told us not to worry that toddlers are picky eaters etc. Again the issues were very subtle and not constant...but as the years went by, 3yo, 4yo, 5yo...we just started getting more concerned as he just got more " stimmy " and socially awkward. There was some repetive behaviours....repeating an ad or scene from a show over and over and some real troubles being potty trained. He still has a bowel movement in a Pullup and he became very " fight or flight " around food. We have been seeing an OT and speech pathologist the past several months and he is still in the process of being diagnosed and tested. SPD and possibly PDD or Aspergers(?)No problems cognitively..he is at " grade " level in all academic subjects but due to low muscle tone has some difficulty with pencil grasp and other fine motor skills...also some gross motor delays. We homeschool and the OT and speech (for pragmatics and oral sensitivity) are really helping. I have been reading about vitamins and diet etc and wanted to learn more ways to help my son. He takes a childrens multi and flax oil supp and Kids Kyo-dophilus probiotic supp. We use Aloe Vera to help with the problems " pooping " that he has due to retaining from low tone. We are researching Gluten free diets and possibly a digestive enzyme. We do the Epsom salt baths as well. Looking forward to learning more. Sorry so long...glad to find this group.
