sleeping too deep to wake for doses

Boy do I hope someone can help! My ds(9) has been chelating (AC protocol, first

DMSA, lately DMSA and ALA) since May and is doing well. At first the night doses

were a breeze, he sat up, swallowed, and we were both back to sleep in under 3

minutes.

Then he got resistant and almost violent with me at midnight, but fine for 4 am.

I altered our schedule a bit to wake him at a different point in the sleep cycle

and that seemed to help. Coming in to the bedroom with the alarm song playing on

the cellphone while I woke him helped too (thanks Pavlov!).

Then we took a break for 3 weeks to get some sound sleep (and because we had

some hard-to-manage weekends).

When we resumed 2 weekends ago we were back to doing well.

This past weekend however, my kid was sleeping so hard there was no waking him

up. Period. I decided we'd halt this round, but he woke up early, and when the

alarm went off he dosed himself. So I figured we'd resume the 3 hour routine for

the rest of the round, but he was impossible to wake again that night. Second

time smart, I turned off the alarm and put the pill box away so we really did

end the round.

So what do I do? Start at 2.5 hours and keep trying every 1/2 hour until he's

willing to wake and cooperate? How much good will I be to him, the other kids,

my job etc. if I go every weekend with no sleep?

On the other hand, I can't just stop and leave the poisons in him!

Starting each weekend in hopes that he'll wake, only to halt early can't be a

great idea either. Not if it happens more than occasionally.

Has anyone had to alter the protocol and hope that the overnight redistribution

doesn't do too much damage? I understand the half life / redistribution issue,

and up until this round I have been meticulous about it. But what if I just

CANNOT get him to wake up? He's 9, and 88 lbs of strong and stubborn. History of

sleep walking and talking plus bedwetting. DEEP sleeper. Now that I think about

it, I'm suprised we haven't had this sooner.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Beth,

Actually a lot of parents try NOT to wake their child up -- I know

this may sound confusing since you've been trying to wake yours.

You can read more about it here:

Maybe it will work for you. Either applesauce or a squirter

syringe with juice ?

Yes, these are difficult issues. Hope it helps.

HA, last night when he wouldn't wake up at midnight I tried the squirter with

juice. He sat bolt upright and spat it out! But then he was awake to take a dose

the swallow-the capsule way ;)

Afterwards he tells me it was NASTY, and he'd rather I put ice on his feet if he

won't wake up!

At 9 years old I guess he's old enough to choose his own drastic measures! (And

it should be less messy than juice spit.)

what're ya gunna do but laugh?!
