Dr Rao to submit paper on male circumcision

Visakhapatnam, May 17: Padma Shri Dr. Kutikuppala Surya Rao,

internationally-renowned physician in the area of HIV and AIDS, has been invited

by Prof. Ian McGowan, Professor of Medicine University, Pittsburgh School of

Medicine, on behalf of Microbicides 2010, to participate and present his

research work.

Dr Surya Rao is going to discuss " Male circumcision as Microbicides technique, a

preventive HIV transmission strategy — acceptability study " at the 2010

International Microbicides Conference being held at the L. Lawrence

Convention Centre in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from May 22 to May 25.

In several studies the male circumcision was proved to prevent sexually

transmitted infections by 80 per cent and HIV 75 per cent.

The World Health Organisation authorised male circumcision as microbicides

technique and working towards implementation extensively in Africa as a pilot

project.

Dr Surya Rao, who has been working especially on HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment

and research, has published several of his works in the prestigious

international journals like British Medical Journal, Antiseptic and JIMA.

Microbicides 2010 international conference in Pittsburgh is going to have

deliberations on them of Microbicides Building Bidges in HIV prevention.

The Pittsburgh University has awarded full scholarship to Dr Surya Rao who is

also a member of the working group of Microbicides Society of India, a

collaborative research body that is working in association with Global

Microbicides Initiative (USA), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and

National Institute of Virology (NIV).

The global experts will discuss the remedial measures for HIV/AIDS during this

international meet. A single pill or gel, which can prevent sexually transmitted

infections and HIV and unwanted pregnancy is on agenda.

A pill a day keeps HIV away is the future vision of all of us working towards

HIV/AIDS free world.
