Guest guest
Yes, I have an idea. Violence may be the result of high testosterone. Suggest you test for high testosterone. This is a simple blood test at lab corp. If high, then you need to lower testosterone via Lupron and chelate. Good luck. From: Rhonda <designbybuess@...> Subject: [ ] SELF ABUSE...My beautiful boy is beating his head and biting his fist!!! Help! Date: Tuesday, December 2, 2008, 1:19 PM My little 6 year old autistic boy who used to just throw tantrums by screaming is now (for the last 4 months) beating his head (temples) with his fists when he doesn't get what he wants, when he is hurting, when he just disagrees with you, when he doesn't understand. He is also biting his wrist to where it has left a big callus and at one point bled. He has 40 hour-week ABA therapy and the therapists try to prevent this, but it is escalating! Does anyone have any ideas? I can't stand to watch this beautiful little boy hurt himself, leaving bruises all over his face He is under the care of a great DAN doc but we just recently did a ton of tests and are waiting for the results. If anyone has any ideas in the meantime, I would love some input. Guest guest
From two old posts of mine: " My 18 year old, very verbal child says: " I used to bang my head on the floor because the pain helped me focus and block out distractions. " (He went on endlessly about this. I am summing up!) " 18 year old son is now 21. So the above post is roughly 3 years old. From June 2008, here is another post of mine: My son used to beat his head on the floor. He explained to me once that he did it because the pain helped him focus. So I am wondering if maybe your son bites his hand to give him something to focus on when he is overwhelmed by what is going on around him? My son was too young at the time to remember clearly now what went on and exactly WHY it helped him focus, but I wonder if having a strong internal sensation might have helped counter an overload of external sensations causing sensory overload. My son adds: " Pain is unique among sensations in that it activates the entire brain. If you do an EEG, the entire brain lights up in reaction to pain, like a really glitchy christmas tree, with different sections flashing on and off at different rates and different times. " I think he is trying to suggest that it helps overcome the glitchiness of his own brain. He adds that he did this stuff when he had threads of thoughts he could not shut down. Pain allowed him to shut those down, almost like rebooting a computer, and start anew. Good luck figuring this out. ----------- Michele http://www.healthgazelle.org http://www.kidslikemine.org http://www.solanorail.org
Guest guest
very quick thought...this most often feels related to " ocd " type of problems around here, rather concurrent in nature - if that makes any sense. Maybe things that help ocd might help with this - they have here. Part & parcel of migraine land for one of my older children here which also makes it feel like a coping behavior too. big sigh...wishing you the best, elizabeth > > My little 6 year old autistic boy who used to just throw tantrums by screaming is now (for the > last 4 months) beating his head (temples) with his fists when he doesn't get what he wants, > when he is hurting, when he just disagrees with you, when he doesn't understand. Guest guest
Rhonda, My son did pretty much exactly what you're describing but we didn't have tamtrums prior to that. For us, supporting the adrenals made a huge difference--the self-injuring reduced almost 100% within a couple weeks. We use nutricology adrenal glandular (ds weighs 45 pounds and takes 625 mgs a day as maintenance now--we started very low, of course), B vitamins 4 times a day, and C four times a day (more often is better if you can, especially in the initial stages). DS also benefits from using chromium to help blood sugar and extra mag. DS in particular also requires huge doses of B2. IMO, using ABA to extinguish this behaviour might actually make it worse but causing more stress. Lots of kids are also happier with extra D vitamin dosed (not sure where you live but in Canada or the UK, most kids simply cannot make enough D). Also, for my son, supping lithium also helped with mood. Guest guest
Rhonda, my son's self abuse and violence toward others stopped when we took certain foods out of his diet. Have you removed casein, soy, chocolate and MSG? These were major offenders for this kind of behavior in my son. Also artificial colors made him scream. Maybe keeping an eye on his diet in relation to behavior would help. We also chelated for several months and are currently taking a month or two off because of surgery and personal issues. We have seen a brilliant change shining through our bright young man during this time off. The biggest change? He has impulse control now, he didn't a year ago. > > My little 6 year old autistic boy who used to just throw tantrums by screaming is now (for the > last 4 months) beating his head (temples) with his fists when he doesn't get what he wants, > when he is hurting, when he just disagrees with you, when he doesn't understand. Guest guest
I am very interested in the meridians of the body. I have recently found connections between my son's food reactions and the places on his body he claims hurt after he has the food. One telling place is the index finger, another is the jaw. They are both in the large intestine meridian. Interesting how kids with autism bite their hands, the large intestine meridian runs through both the jaw (teeth) and the tip of the index finger down between it and the thumb. I have read that putting pressure on points in the meridian will relieve the pain along it. It is also well known that gut inflammation also affects the brain. I believe these are all interconnected and this is why we see this behavior in kids with autism. I believe it is related to mostly food allergies. > > From two old posts of mine: > > " My 18 year old, very verbal child says: > " I used to bang my head on the floor because the pain helped me focus > and block out distractions. I noticed that he seemed incapable of stopping and that he had a rhythmic tendency to the behavior. I suspected unusual seizure behavior (no known history of seizures) and his doctor, knowing there was no way we could get an EEG, put him on Trileptal. He still takes it to this day and when he misses a dose, we know by the self abuse behaviors coming back. We can also tell when he's outgrown his current dose by the same indicator. I'm not saying that's what your kid has, only saying that it's a possibility to be explored with his doctor.
Guest guest
What about a therapy wrist weights, or weight jacket to hold his hands and his body down until he calms down so he does not hurt himself. Guest guest
My one son did something similar to this....he would bash himself into things...usually with his head. One time we had to take him into the dr because he had such a black eye that it leaked around the eye and his dr was worried he injured his brain. What helped him was rather a bit complicated...but here goes. First it was going GF/CF. Next we started on a high dose amino acid powder called BrainLink by the pain and stress center. He was on this for years. We also added GABA and had his allergies tested and removed them. My son maybe different from your kiddo as he is also FAS but this helped him immensely. I hope you find some good answers soon, as I know how heartbreaking this is for you. Ronni > Yes, I have an idea. Violence may be the result of high testosterone.
