Guest guest
The number of children of all ages living with HIV keeps increasing and no one asks the question where they got it from? When it's MTCT, unless the child is well taken care of medically from birth, the child dies very young. The fact that mother - father may have died of AIDS is not sufficient to imply in-utero transmission. Any child over the age of 5 living with HIV may well have been contaminated through shared syringes. There is also evidence that children infected during health care may transmit to parents through shared needles. Aimée Mwadi Kadi, president of Society for Women and AIDS in DR Congo reported that in some displaced population one syringe was shared by several families. We know of entire village in Tamil Nadu HIV+ because a traditional practionner shared a syringe. We also need to protect children against HIV, and to protect those already living with HIV from contracting Drug Resistant HIV or Hepatitis B /C (respectively 20 million and 2 million esstimated YEARLY cases though health care injections - see WHO Viral Hepatitis report to last week's Executive board meeting of the WHO). Anyone worked on that? Garance e-mail: <g_upham@...>
