I tried (briefly) but I >just couldn't stand the limitations to my taste buds. It does appear >healthy though. > Hi , I know many people who have been following macrobiotic diet for wery long time. I know people who have cured cancer, diabetes, AIDS, Crohn's, Alzheimer's, U.Colitis, Epilepsy, Acne, Eczema, Psoriasis, Multiple Sclerosis, CFS, FMS, ADD ...and many other " incurable " diseases by following that diet. That diet is slow way of doing bowel and tissue cleanse, suppose you have dirty bowels. For new-born, that diet is a way of keepeng bowel and body clean. Any traditional diet, adjusted for your own needs (your individuality) and your own lifestyle is in the same time macrobiotic diet. That was at least the idea of Ohsawa, man who started Macro movement. Most books about macrobiotics diet are writen by Japanese authors, and because of that, diet presented is very close to Japanese traditional diet. Macrobiotic diet does not necessery have to be a Japanese diet. It can be any diet, either based on the tradition of one nation, or based on the tradition of many different nations. I do not say that Japanese diet is bad , I just say that there are other traditios, too, and other macrobiotic diets that does not necesserly are calld macrobiotic. Of all diets that are favorising high percentage of cooked food, japanese diet has many good qualityes and may be supperior for some people. But, you can also live on very low percentage of cooked foods, and still follow the " macrobiotic diet " . When it comes to diseases, it is far more important what you don't eat, than what you are actually eating. What I want to say is: You can do much more harm to your body by eating something that is bad, than you can do good by eating something that is good. If, for example, you avoiding to take some high quality dietary supplements for only one day, you may even not notice any halth draw back. Let's say you have been following macro diet for some time. You avoided toxins , and you are making sure you faitfully take every day high quality foods (flaxseed oil, komby tea, seaweed, burdock tea, kukicha tea, umeboshi, miso soup...) And then, let's say you skip one day all those great foods. You may not even notice it. But if you for example take sam food containing some poison that you did not eat for 3 or more months: (margarine, Aspartame, MSG, E212, Sugar, refined salt, baking powder, vine vinegar, ... ) you may get the schok of your life. It may make you sick for many days. That is why I say that it is far more important " what you avoid eating " , than it is important " what you are actualy eating " , so far that what you are eating is *natural*, *whole* , *good for you* , and in *ballanced proportions*. Yes, I said *good for you*. The most important aspect of the macrobiotic diet is individuality !!!!! That is what makes this diet different then other diets. There is no diet good for everyone !!!! Every diet must be adjusted for individual needs of the person who eats it !!! People from the East have been using differnt ways of determinig what is good for someone. One of the way was to eat only one or only a few different foods, and to try to feel how does it afect your own body, your digestion, you mind, your spirituality, your mental clearnes. Today, we have more simple ways of finding what is good/bad for someone. Kinesiology, blood typing, bowel toxicity testing, urine Ph testing,.... But that does not mean that you should eat something that does make you feel bad, even if it is suppoedly good for your blood type. So, befeore you start to believe in anything you read in Macrobiotics books, you should first find out what is " your group of foods " that you should eat, and waht are the foods that you should avoid. Now, I am not talking about processed, refined, polluted foods. Those are to be avoided for everyone. I am tolking about organic and/or wild whole foods, minimally proceessed, like meat, eggs, milk, milk products, fish, vegetables, grains, beans, fruits,... Some people can better tolerate those foods and may have high needs for them , other can get sick when eating it. One of the most simple way to find what are the foods good for you is to find out what is your blood type, and to filtrate any diet through " Blood Type Filter " . Other important factors: How much are you physically active ? Are you pregnant ? How old are you ? (Diet for children should not be the same as diet for adults) In what climate do you live ? What season is today ? What are you going to do today ? (meditate, pilot the plain, sit in front of computer, or TV, play football, swimm,.....) What are you going to do tomorrow ? Areyou going to spend all day inside, or are you going out on -30C :-) ? .... many many diferent thigs can be taken in consideration when choosing diet. Here you will find links to the lists of foods that are complementar for different blood types: http://home.sol.no/~dusan/blood_type.html Some very succesful diets are actually very close to one or two blood types. For example, Paleo Diet (Paleolithic diet, Stone Age diet) is almost identical to the diet that is god for the people with blood type O. (Not strange, when we know that 20 000 years ago the only blood type was O) Japanese macrobiotic diet (Michio Kushi, Aveline Kushi), and other vegetarian diets are almost identical to the diet that is god for the people with blood type A. The same is with other diets like Zone diet, Atkinsons diet,Raw food,... Each of them is better for some people, though, it is most likely that all the people will feel good in the beging of any new diet. If you, after being on standard vestern diet, start with any special diet, which limits the consumption of sugar, refined foods, industrially processed foods, ..... it is most likely that you will feel great. But , if that diet is not adjusted for your own needs, after some months, or years, you will definitivly experience draw backs, and will feel to make some changes. I know many people who have been following some special (restrictive) diets for very long tome (raw food eating, vegan diet, " japanese vegetarian " macrobiotic diet, Atkinsons diet, Paleo diet...) and who just had to make a change. The best expalnation so far , has been given by Dr.D'Adamo, who understood that blood type can be used to clasify diets and people. Just a few examples: If you meet someoen folowing " japanese " macrobiotic diet (Kushi) for very long time (10-20yeras), and still feeling great, it is most likely that person's blood type is A. If you meet someoen folowing Paleo diet for very long time (10-20y), and still feeling great, that it is most likely that person's blood type is O. If you meet someoen folowing Vegan diet for very long time (10-20y), and still feeling great, that it is most likely that person's blood type is A. If you meet someoen eating everything, (modern vestern diet) , for very long time (10-20y), and still feeling great, that it is most likely that person's blood type is B. But, if you yourself want to be healthy, adjust your diet for your own blood type, and take the best from raw food, vegan diet, " japanese vegetarian " macrobiotic diet, Atkinsons diet, Paleo diet... And be strict on " Avoids " . Taking Avoids may make you sick. and, about garlic: Yes, it is a great food. Yes, it can afect brain and brain vawes. Yes, if you have cancer, you should eat it. Yes, if you suffer from Alzheimer's you should avoid it. (But garlic is not the only thing that Alzheimer's should avoid. It is onlu one of 1500 possible problems.) Yes, pilots are not allowed to eat it (scienticicaly proved that it affect brain). Yes, it helps for hypertension. Yes, it is a great medicine for hundreds of different diseases. Yes, if you meditate, and want to reach higher levels, you should avoid it. Yes, it contain enough poson to kill parasites. Yes, if you take a very large amount it may make you very sick. Yes, it is a great way to prevent diseases. All of you guys and girls are right !!! Each of you said the truth ! I just don't know why some of you think that other person is wrong :-) Healthy diet is a very fine ballance betwen " beneficiel non toxic foods " and " beneficiel toxic foods " . We need them both in different circumstances. For example, Arsenic is a poison, but it is in the same time an esential mineral. Healthy diet is ballance between posonus and non-posonus nutrients. If you would eat only non-posonus foods (what is almost impossible), your body will very fastly become a host for numerous viruses, bacteria, yeasts and parasitic animals. Every living plant naturaly contain poison !!! That poison keeps that plant immune to bacterial, fungal, viral, diseases, and immun to insects, worms, and other possible " predators " . Even brown rice, that beautiful innocent grain, that when long time cooked, can cure the worst digestive problems caused by intestinal flora imballance, if taken raw in sufficient quantity, can kill the strongest intestinal worms :-) Beautiful green salad that you are eating contain powerfull chemicals that keeps bacteria and fungy on distance, that's why it is green and beautiful. Otherways, it would be sick and ugly. Healthy diet is actualy diet in which amount of poison and nutrients that you are eating is high enough to keep you diseases free, but low enough to not make you sick. In other wards, the mirracle word BALLANCE explain everything. Because we are all different, some people can support hundreds times quanities of some foods that would make another person sick immediately. So, keep eating all natural posions that are good for your body, for your mind, for your spiriuality, and enjoy it. It does makes you healthy !!!
