My two boys have been put on Neurontin for possible seizures in the parietal lobe that may be why they have not acquired speech. They are building up a little at a time. How long until we know if this medication is going to be effective for them? If it does not work, do we taper back down? Guest guest
Hey Pamela! I have seen nothing negative. I was warned it may make them sleepy but I have not even seen that. They have the same energy level and seem to be doing fine. I just don't know yet if it is helping but they are not at full dose yet. We are taking 10 days to get up to the full dose. Guest guest
Neurontin is a non narcotic so it generally doesn't require any tapering down. I personally still stand strong on Lyrica - it is the replacement for neurontin and seems to show it's working very quick. For treatment of siezures I found that nuerontin took alot of doses and that could be hard for a child, Lyrica is generally one a day. Neurontin also took about a month or so until we could see any significant signs of it helping..and was discontinued after those signs went away - we are all individuals internally as well as externally so it may be different for each child. Out of the 20 plus diff meds they have put me on over the years I do have to say that Neurontin was one of the 'lightest'. Have you noticed a 'marked' difference ? Guest guest
Dana..possible seizures? Can't they verify it somehow? I had a negative reaction to this drug when given it many years ago, for supposed temporal lobe damage.... I do not have seizures though, but suffered a severe head injury with one gran mal seizure, and that left me with mood/memory problems and terrible migraines. So anyway...I took it for two days and ended up not being able to get out of bed. I was shaky, and weak all over and I felt really really cold. This is not a " typical " reaction I'm sure, but the pharmacist told me to stop taking it ASAP. Again, I'm sure that was rare, but read the package insert and know the possibilities. Weight the benefits versus possible issues...etc. My sister in law consequently was also prescribed this drug for neurofibramatoisis (sp?) pain. It helped her with the pain and I don't think she had any serious effects to it, but I know that she did not stay on it long. -- In , " Pamela " <pamelaleigh99@...> wrote: > > We are considering this also. Guest guest
Thanks to those who have responded. We have seen nothing negative and are slowly moving up the dosage right now. The doctor is having us take close to two weeks to get to full dosage. Guest guest
*Did you do some sort of test to determine this. I was just wondering, because I did inquire about this a few weeks ago at Dr. Miranda's office. They claim that when things work for the child, you see the changes in them that are so amazing prior to treatment. Guest guest
It takes 2-6 wks to really effect the kids. My son has had bad experiences from various seizure meds- including causing more and different seizures and loss of language. Unless your child truly has seizures I strongly suggest keeping them off these drugs. ALso, Depakote is associated with causing autism.
