UN Special Rapporteur on right to health to visit Guatemala

Rapporteur on right to health, Anand Grover, will visit Guatemala from 12 to 18

May 2010. In his first mission to the country, Mr. Grover will focus on the key

issues of indigenous peoples health, access to medicines and womens health,

including sexual and reproductive issues.

" I will concentrate on the right to health in Guatemala, including access to

health care as well as the underlying determinants of health, said the

independent expert mandated by the UN Human Rights Council to monitor the right

of everyone to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and

mental health.

The purpose of the mission is to understand, in the spirit of co-operation and

dialogue, how Guatemala endeavours to implement the right to health, the

measures taken for its successful realization and the obstacles encountered both

at the national and international level, explained Mr. Grover, who is visiting

the country at the invitation of the Government.

The Human Rights Council envoy will meet with Government officials and

representatives of the United Nations Country Team. He will also meet with

representatives of civil society, including non -governmental organizations,

health professionals and academics.

After the visit, the Special Rapporteur will submit a report on his mission to

the Human Rights Council, in June 2011.

A press conference will be held at 11:00AM on 18 May 2010 at Clarion Suites

Hotel.

Anand Grover was appointed the Special Rapporteur on the right of everyone to

the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health in 2008 by the United

Nations Human Rights Council.

As Special Rapporteur, he is independent from any Government or organization and

serves in his individual capacity. The United Nations first decided to appoint a

Special Rapporteur to examine questions relevant to the right to health in 2002.

Mr. Grover is currently the Director of the Lawyers Collective HIV/AIDS in

India.
