Oh.... poor little companies......

Screw them all, I say. If you can't afford to make a safe toy, then you

shouldn't be making toys for children. Let the whole market die if it

can't protect childrens' health.

But once again the emphasis from the outset is that somehow the

financial health of a company is more important than the physical health

of a child.

I thought this article was about small toy companies that HAVE been

making safe toys in response to all the difficulties larger

manufacturer's have been having with toxicity.

They're using natural materials and safe finishes, and the problem is

that because they are not great big companies selling huge quantities

all over the world, they can't afford $4500 to have each toy tested.

Thats real funny. I knew my son had chemical sensitivity 17 years ago. When we

found out, we got rid of all of his plastic toys. We only bought our son toys

from specialty stores, train sets, organic, wooden toys and what not. I wondered

how he tested high for lead by the time he was 16, and just assumed it was our

first home, or dirt he played in in Montana in the area around our second home

which was new construction. That is, until this lead in toys thing came out.

DMSA chelation made him better, because it removes lead. One of the lead issues

was with a wooden thomas the tank engine car, which he had played with a lot as

a child..so it is not just the big plastic companies with the issue. I remember

replacing plastic containers with smaller wood and metal boxes. These were

purchased at specialty stores. come to find out the paint on the metal boxes was

tainted with lead. I had also got him cute metal toys like the jack in the box

or the spinning top, and come to find out the paint on them was possibly lead

tainted.

I feel no sympathy for these small or specialty toy manufacturers that they

also would have to comply with testing just like the big guys.

Lord knows for the money I shelled out for those toys, I deserved to be giving

my child safe toys, and that's the entire reason why I was paying the premium

for the toys. Other wise I would have been just as well have had him play with

plastic purchased from a garage sale, he would have gotten lead anyway

regardless, but I would not have been out all of the extra money.

Who say's they are safe? and how do they know?

And if they don't know, then they shouldn't be able to declare the toys

safe. They should have to tell everyone " I don't know if this toy is

safe, we don't do any safety testing. " That's called honesty.

For example, they might say " I didn't treat the wood with anything.....

so it is safe " . But where did they get the wood? They may have picked

up a cheap batch from the hardware store and not realised that a lot of

" untreated " timber is already pre-treated with arsenic.

You should not be able to declare a toy is safe unless you know it is safe.

Ignorance of safety issues is not safety, it's make believe.

No one said anything about honesty or dishonesty - the article, (which

I read) said that there is a recommendation to exempt small companies

from testing and labeling because they are using natural materials.

No one said that any material that is natural is therefore not tainted

with anything potentially dangerous. No one said that they are going

to be able to label things as safe when they haven't been tested.

ALL I was pointing out is that the small companies that already

voluntarily meet the measures that the security commission is

recommending as compulsory may be forced out of business if the

exemption is ultimately not allowed because they will not be able to

afford the testing part. That's all; descriptive claim.

I heard Selecta won't be exporting anything to the US any longer as a

result of this, and I think they have to meet all the strict oko test

standards, but presumably don't think the amount of US sales justifies

the additional expense.
