Guest guest
My son's most recent hair test shows super high copper, as high as you can go, very low boron, and very high calcium ( I do supplement calcium). Dana, you answered some of my other posts about lowering copper etc, and talked about one of your kids being calcium " toxic " . I am not sure I understand what that means. I have the following questions/concerns: 1. It appears from my reading in Andy's books and from answers to my other posts that my son is " wasting " calcium, that it is not being properly absorbed. I worry that the ultra low boron means he may be having bone density issues as well. We are strictly casein free, so calcium and bone density issues weigh heavily on my mind. 2. My son drinks two fortified 8 oz glasses of rice milk per day. He gets about 500mg from this and 50 mg in his multi. So from my reading he would need about another 250 mg per day to meet the needs of a 3 1/2 year old. He gets about 150 iu or so of vitamin D from his rice milk and his CLO. I understand he would need about 400 iu to meet the RDA. 3. I was giving my son Kirkman's hypoallergenic calcium supplement. I briefly stopped this week amidst concerns that this might be contributing to his high copper issues. Is it true that calcium can contribute to copper retention? Also, I worry about the trace amounts of lead in these supps, but how else is a gfcf sf kid with picky eating habits, going to get sufficient calcium? 4. With the 250 mg of calcium the supplement also yielded about 43 more iu of vit d, so my son would be getting about 800 mg of calcium and 180 iu of vit d. Is this enough? 5. My concern is if I have been supplementing thus with calcium, and he is still wasting it it appears, how do I make him better absorb it? I give it with magnesium. But Dana, you also mention that vitamin K may be required? How do you supplement with this? Do you give it with mag and the calcium all at once? And if so, how much? I read that this vitamin can be toxic to kids. What else would be required? Or could it be that my son is " calcium toxic " - if you could better define this for me? Could it be that the calcium supp is actually harmful to him? What then? How do you make him not calcium toxic, yet not neglect the needs of his growing bones in the process? Is this where IP6 comes in? You answered my post about this - does this help with excess copper and calcium toxicity? I am very confused by all of this. 6. Lastly, about vitamin D, should I be supplementing with more of this? I have a gel cap with 1000 iu of vit d, I would probably break this down and start by giving about 200 iu or so more than he gets to meet the RDA. Should D be given with or away from anything in particular? Isn't there a ratio if I am not mistaken of vitamin A to D? Aren't they synergistic or something? I know I have thrown a lot of things at you, but I am truly confused and do not know what to do. Today I gave the calcium supp again. But I don't know whether to continue giving it, and if so, with what else, or whether it might be bad for my boy, and I need to know how to supplement the vitamin D as well. I know you have experience with all of this. Thanks in advance, Irene
