Guest guest
You know, this thread, and this post, remind me of something very important. In order for a non-mainstream way of doing things to gain acceptance, there needs to be a group of devoted individuals willing to swim upstream, go against the flow, and press ahead even against purposeful pressure to get them to stop. I was part of another notable movement that had as many fighting against it and applying undue pressure to get those pioneers to stop. It was the homeschool movement in the late 70s early 80s. That was back when CPS or DHS or your state's version loved to hear of a homeschooling family to harass. It was when school departments demanded you prove that you were providing an equivalent instruction program. Newspapers were filled with educators cautioning against this great danger, and of course the NEA made many firm statements against it. Superintendents accidentally lost application to homeschool papers, all sorts of fun stuff. Homeschooling has gotten so much easier in many areas that I worry that people don't understand the great right their predecessors earned them with great effort and risk. Well, now, it is the fight for our children in another arena - autism recovery. Whether it is trying to get the mainstream medical establishment to support our radical choices to use biomed and chelation or just to get them to admit what is actually causing the damage, this is what the early 1980s were to homeschooling. All of the brave parents willing to put the time and effort into doing their own research and treatments are the brave pioneers of the autism battle. I think we need to keep that in perspective. Instead of focusing on all the faithful followers of the former beliefs of autism treatment, we are paving a new path that helps parents of damaged children see that there is a different road with better results. I'm not as eloquent as I wish I could be about it, but I'm hoping you get the point. This is the stuff the Wild West was made of and most every major advance in mankind. It is the PIONEER willing to take a different road and not be swayed by the fearful ones who are trying to get that pioneer back onto the accepted path. I'm proud of all the pioneers here and what they have done to help. I'm expecting there will be a day 20 years from now, when I'm once again part of some shameful departure from the accepted, and compare it to the battle to save our kids from autism of the beginning of the 21st century. I have no doubt that reality and application will triumph. But, we need to stand firm and not let them scare us back onto their path. Given the many good results and great stories coming out of biomed and chelation, more will eventually follow and society will one day look back and laugh at how backwards the treatments and perceptions of autism before the turn of the century were. :-) Keep it up Pioneers!!!
