IV chelation is not recommended even though many DAN docs do it. Consider

stopping the IV chelation and switching to oral chelation on Andy Cutler's

protocol. Many here chelate on our own without a doc. In the US both ALA and

DMSA are available with a prescription.

Mehtas ET Method is new in the world (5 yrs old) and many docs do not have

the equipment (pediatric size, 3-D casting frame)or the EDF (elongation,

derotation, flexion) technique experience. AND, dont understand the

necessity of EARLY TREATMENT. Most docs in the US (unless they studied or

did their residency in France or Belgium, etc...) are not exposed to EDF.

They are exposed to the more well known Risser technique which was

developed before EDF and is only a 2 dimensional approach to

maintenance/correction. Risser casting was never used to cure infants

with rapidly progressing curves. EDF was never used to cure infants until

Min Mehta did it. Mehtas specialized EDF is the Gold Standard of Care for

PIS because she dedicated 30 yrs of her surgical career to specializing

this ET Method with EDF. You'll notice the widely trimmed mushroom shaped

window in front (w/ rib flaps) to prevent rib and chest wall deformities

and the hole in the back to address rotation. Risser casting has neither

and is not the best approach to correcting a rapidly progressing scoliosis

in infancy. The article I mentioned will give you some good info/ammo and

will help you to advocate for your son by making sure he has the right

cast.

Please lean on us for questions after you have read the article.

Sincerely,

HRH

Hi

Sorry for my ignorance but I really dont understand any of this. I have read the

Mehta article and watched the youtube video.

I have asked my babies doctor about Mehta and he is aware of her.

At this point all I really know is that my son has a 37 degree curve to the left

and the doctor will cast him at the end of the month. I cant tell you if its

going to be properly applied because I dont know.

We dont see our doctor until the end of the month but I will try to ask these

questions then. If most doctors dont understand then I will never understand!

Sorry but Im at the mercy of our doctor and if he doesnt understand then what do

you do?

Darlene,

Bring him the article, ask him if the cast will look like the example in

the article. Does he follow Mehtas Early Treatment Principles? Is the

primary focus to decrease/correct the rotation of the curve, because that

is KEY in attaining complete correction.

Ask about the frame he is using, does it have 3-D corrective ability (w/

last component being flexion)

How long will his first cast be on? And to what degree does he consider

bracing after the casting process? 10 degrees? 20 degrees?

Does he have an Early Treatment patient base yet and can he connect you

with other parents of children who have been through it in his hospital?

Im sorry this is so challenging Darlene. Ive seen a lot of really bad

casts and the best thing to do is to educate everyone here on proper ET

casting, so their child doesnt miss an ET opportunity.

Perhaps, he knows more than we think? I dont know. I just want to help

you with good questions for him...

You'll get it nailed down.

Please keep us posted and call me if you have any questions.

You know I really dont find this challenging at all and personaly I find that

comment offensive. Also the comment about " Perhaps he knows more than we think. "

whos " we " ? if there are other people from this group that think my doctor is an

idiot please speak up! It would be nice to know.

You know I just started on this group and yes this will be a challenge but I

came here looking for people that are experiencing what im going through NOT TO

BE LECTURED! I thought I was done with that in college.

Yes I will learn what to ask I just need to do my way not yours.

If my sons doctor is " not educated " I will find this out.

Sorry maybe I will just keep my mouth shut!

Darlene,

I can see that you are really offended and that was not my intention at

all. I saw worry in your last post and Im just trying to help. It is

really challenging for most families. Thats why I said that. Many

families have had to travel great distances because the casts applied in

their home state were not correcting their children and they were wasting

valuable time. I dont want to see this happen to any family, yours

included.. Ive seen what a bad cast can do and its not something anyone

wants. Thats why Im trying to share the differences....

The " Perhaps he knows more than we think, " was not meant to be any kind

of insult. It was just me being hopeful that the doc you are seeing

actually may have more experience in EDF than we know. You wont know this

until you ask these very detailed questions...

I never said your doc was an idiot and if my post gave that impression I

am very, very sorry. Im not the best writer. I am actually hopeful about

your doc. The doc is very educated to be in his position and Im sure he

is a great surgeon. But, many in the " surgical " world dont yet accept

this form of treatment. Thats all...Please dont take this any other way.

My goal is not get parents upset, its to help educate them on Dr. Mehtas

ET Method with EDF.

Sincerely,

HRH
