Recovery from Autism Study

Dr. Deborah Fein at the University of Connecticut is currently conducting the

first NIH-funded study to document recovery from autism. If you know of a child

who has lost his/her diagnosis of an autism spectrum disorder, we would love to

hear about him or her. In additon to looking for children with a history of an

autism spectrum disorder who have since lost (or may at some point lose) their

diagnosis, we are also looking for children who currently have a diagnosis of an

autism spectrum disorder. As of now, we are enrolling children who are 8-17

years and above and are able to read at a third grade level. We are hoping to

learn more about what factors predict recovery in order to help in form

treatment possibilities for all children.

The study involves 2 sessions (we can come to your home or will pay for

your travel to CT) in which your child is administered a battery of tests on

language, memory, executive functioning, reading, writing, etc. The child is

given $100 in exchange for completing the tests and you as the parent are

provided with a neuropsychological report of the test findings from a licensed

psychologist. We also like to interview the parent during one of the two visits

about the child's early history. There is a second, optional component to the

study, involving an MRI in Hartford. If the child chooses to participate in this

aspect of the study, he/she will receive an additional $100 and travel expenses

to Hartford will be reimbursed.

Please contact Molly Helt via email at mollyhelt@... or phone

(860-456-2077) or Dr. Fein (deborah.fein@...) if you have any questions or

would like to participate in this study.
