Today 1.3 million girls are trapped in prostitution in Independent India. These

girls are some of the most vulnerable human beings in all history. They are

raped repeatedly for years. Thousands die and new girls are brought in to

replace them every day. Sometimes from drought-stricken farmers. This

eye-opening hour will reveal a powerful story of how money-lenders in rural

India demand girls and women as collateral against a loan.

 

These girls are still struggling to challenge the legacy of British colonialism

in the form of a policy that normalizes the existence of brothels and makes the

purchase of sex acceptable: a policy that protects men from disease but not the

women and girls from these men.

 

But there is hope. You can help. You can support Ruchira's campaign with victims

and survivors of sex-trafficking to change the Indian anti-trafficking law,

ITPA, so that it penalises buyers and traffickers and protects women and girls.

journalist to activist, from making The Selling of Innocents to establishment of

Apne Aap Women Worldwide and how her involvement has changed her life and the

lives of thousands of women survivors of prostitution.

Ruchira will also talk about how girls overcome adversity to realize a better

life for themselves.  Director of Equality Now Taina Bien Amie will talk about

the trafficking girls as a universal problem based on male demand, including in

New York and Equality Now’s support for the Apne Aap campaign.
