Invitation:

National Consultation on HIV Social Research Priorities in India

Date: December 17th – 19th 2009, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai

Summary: This consultation is designed to identify and prioritize HIV social

research needs and to contribute to theory driven, empirically validated

research that affects people vulnerable to and made vulnerable by HIV infection.

Guest speakers will include experts and researchers from a broad spectrum of

HIV/AIDS agencies, academic institutions and health and development

organizations. Experts will also be drawn from fields such as Human Rights,

gender, Heath Equity and various other social science areas. They will discuss

issues that interface with HIV/AIDS theory and methods which are relevant to the

HIV response in India.

This is a very specialized consultation and delegates are expected from all over

the country and abroad. The specific target audiences are: HIV social and

behavioral researchers, program managers, policy makers, people infected,

affected and vulnerable to HIV and those who are interested in the social

aspects of health, particularly health policy research in India. The number of

delegates invited to this consultation is limited in order to facilitate active

participation in sharing experiences and exchanging ideas on HIV social research

for the National HIV response.

This consultation would assist people working in HIV/AIDS programs and projects

to develop, manage, and sustain effective and efficient HIV/AIDS programs and

projects which are guided by theories and findings which are empirically

validated.

The National Consultation on HIV Social Research Priories in India is part of

The National HIV Social Research Initiative: (A TISS- ACTIONAID project, being

implemented in collaboration with NACO and UNAIDS)

This consultation is open for contributions from experts internationally and

nationally. You are invited to submit an abstract/paper for this conference.

The deadline for the submission of expression of interest/abstract is August 28,

2009.

Call for Papers/ Expression of Interest

National Consultation on HIV Social Research Priorities in India

Date: December 17th – 19th 2009. Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai

Papers for presentation covering both, theoretical and methodological aspects of

HIV/AIDS Social Research are invited. This also includes experience reports and

empirical evidence on any of the conference themes. All papers/abstracts

submitted must be original research conducted within the last 5 years.

If your expression of interest/abstract is accepted you will receive a

notification by mid September 2009. All the panelists should be able to submit

a complete text of their paper (8,000-10,000 words) before November 2009 with a

final draft submitted by the date of the conference.

A selected list of peer reviewed papers will be nominated for publication in an

edited volume, the HIV Social Research Agenda in India.

For this consultation, we are soliciting papers that belong to the following

categories:

1. Review of HIV Social Research in India: Scope and Challenges

2. Applying social science theory and methods for monitoring, tracking, d

evaluation of HIV response in India

3. Creating Social Capital for HIV response in India. Theoretical relevance and

methodological issues

4. Theory and methods of Complex Interventions in Complex Settings: HIV response

among migrant workers

5. Structural barriers and facilitators in HIV response in India, and a review

of the trajectories in which HIV vulnerabilities are amplified and exasperated

among vulnerable populations

6. Social determinants and social consequences of HIV infection among the sexual

monitories and other vulnerable populations

7. Creating supportive social environment and structural interventions:

Theoretical and programmatic issues

8. Access, Governance, Rights, Gender and Equity in HIV response in India

9. Human Security Implications of HIV epidemic in India

10. Strengthening Evidence base for HIV Response in India

11. District level monitoring of HIV vulnerability and responses: Theory and

practice

Please identify which area your paper most applies to and following the given

format, submit an electronic copy of the abstract to the address given below no

later than August 28, 2009.

Abstract Format Guidelines

1. An abstract, no more than 300 words, should be submitted electronically and

formatted in font 12 in normal (Latin) Arial.

2. On the top of the abstract, outside the typing area (in the header), put the

title and designated research area(s).

3. Please remember to put your full name and contact details (postal address,

email, telephone number and fax) on the abstract.

4. Abstracts which do not conform to the format guidelines provided above will

not be considered.

Abstract Contents

A suggested outline for your abstracts is as follows:

1. Choose a title that clearly indicates the topic of the paper and which is

related to the objectives of the conference.

2. State the problem or research question raised by your work, with specific

reference to relevant prior research.

3. State the main point or argument of the proposed presentation.

4. Regardless of the subfield, cite sufficient data, and explain why and how

they support the main point or argument.

5. State the relevance of your ideas to past work or to the future development

of the field. Describe analyses in as much detail as possible.

6. If your paper is accepted for presentation, you must list the future research

needs of the topics you are presenting and must submit a final draft of the

paper before you attend the conference.
