Call for input – SRH and HIV linkages

Dear Friends

ATHENA is working in collaboration with UNAIDS to map and identify examples of

community projects addressing linkages between sexual and reproductive health

and HIV and AIDS. We are looking to initiate a mapping of work in this area,

from which to develop approximately 20 case studies of work from 7 regions

(North America, Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe and Central Asia, North

Africa and the Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and East

Asia-Pacific) for a report to be launched on World AIDS Day 2010.

We would like to explore, document and showcase the rich diversity of work that

is ongoing at this intersection – with a strategic emphasis on the innovation

that is being led by and with communities and by key affected populations,

including women living with HIV.

As more emphasis is placed on integrating and/or linking SRH and HIV services,

it is a key moment to document and begin to assess the lessons learned and

achievements of community models, which have not been in central focus to date.

It is also a key moment to examine the intersection of SRH and HIV from a

cross-cutting perspective that can serve to demonstrate how the promotion of

gender equality and the empowerment of women; improvements in maternal and child

health; and efforts to address HIV are all linked and can be addressed as such

in practice.

The project will produce an important tool for sharing lessons learned and key

successes from initiatives across settings and constituencies to inform the

continued efforts toward linking SRH and HIV in practice, and will create a

platform for garnering more attention to community innovation, which has been in

large part overlooked in the mainstream linkage/integration work to date.

If you are working at the intersection between SRH and HIV, we would love to

hear from you so that we can include your work in the mapping and/or develop a

case study for the report. Case studies will be selected on the basis of:

- Community led rights-based projects working at the intersection of SRH and

HIV, including the SRH of women living with HIV

- Diversity of key populations targeted across regions

- Participation/leadership of key populations in design and implementation of

the project

- Innovativeness of project / diversity of project ‘type’ across regions

- Outcomes / successes – if known

Due to the relatively tight timeframe of launching the report on the

1stDecember, we request your inputs by

*Friday 24th September*.

Tyler Crone, (Director of ATHENA Network) will be coordinating the project, and

a Orza (Joint Coordinator of the Women’s Networking Zone 2010) will be

leading the research. If you would be interested in inputting into this project,

please contact luisa.orza@... and tyler.crone@...

Many thanks and we look forward to hearing about your work.

Warm regards

a and Tyler
