Guest guest
Sex in the City Cadence Mandybura, 08 Dec 2009 While it's difficult for anyone to truly assess how adventurous couples might be behind closed doors, most seem to think that not only do Chennaiites experiment just as much as any other city, but such experimentation is nothing new. " I think people are already experimenting in the bedroom, and people are more open to their affectionate tendencies, " says musician Sanjeev . Niladri Bose, radio professional says, " I am very sure that we are not conservative in Chennai. We have practised sex for thousands of years and are extremely creative in everything we do. I believe that people are not that open to saying things like `We did the doggy last night' or `We tried position 43', but certain groups and communities probably do find their space to discuss these sorts of things. " Where the conservatism shows through is not in how people act in the privacy of their own bedrooms but how openly kinky sex may be discussed in public. " I think very few people are opening up, " asserts a Niranjini, a director. " Chennai is a decade behind other cities. Some people are opening up here, though, mostly because of independent thinking although influences from abroad also play a role. " Magdalene Jeyarathnam, founder and director of the Centre for Counselling, notes that the awareness of HIV over the past ten years has opened up discussion about sex and pleasure. At the same time, " Talking about issues like sex toys is still very hush-hush, and there is an assumption that those who interested in these things are also promiscuous. " It's possible that Chennai's stereotype of being traditional in fact encourages racy sex. " There is an old guard with more traditional views, " says consultant Jayraj Rau. " Parents still haven't been taught how to speak about sex with their children. But there is a younger generation who are broad-minded, and the trend towards open-mindedness is definitely a good thing. Strong, negative taboos can make people obsess over sex in a negative way. " Sanjeev reaches similar conclusions and shares, " Because of tradition people are less open about sex, but I think this probably leads to more experimentation, as the forbidden is always more appealing. " Magdalene, however, takes a different stance: " Because Chennai is known as `conservative' and `traditional', there is an assumption that we are sexually repressed. On the contrary, Chennai is very broad-minded when it comes to sexuality, being open to LGBT issues and even running regular columns about sexuality in major newspapers. That is simply amazing. " Although opinion is somewhat diverse, one way or another Chennai is progressing. Keep your eyes peeled for a new toy shop. http://www.expressbuzz.com/edition/story.aspx?Title=Sex+in+the+City & artid=tZ9PCA\ ORZ8Q= & SectionID=lifojHIWDUU= & MainSectionID=lifojHIWDUU= & SEO= & SectionName=rSY|6Q\ Yp3kQ=
