Maharashtra governor stresses greater public awareness against HIV in Kerala

KOZHIKODE: Expressing grave concern over the alarming rise in the number of HIV

infected persons in the country, Maharashtra governor K Sankaranarayan today

called for initiating steps to bring public awareness to contain the deadly

disease.

" Although India has succeeded in warding off the threats posed by deadly

diseases like small pox and chicken pox, the alarming cases of HIV positive in

the country is a matter of serious concern and we should now give thrust to

bring public awareness to fight the disease " , he said at a function to disburse

Rs15 lakhs among 300 HIV infected children in Kerala and adjoining parts

neighbouring Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Sankaranarayanan, who had announced Rs1 lakh contribution towards the welfare of

HIV infected children at the function, lauded the efforts of 'Global Kerala

Initiative' an NGO that had been engaged in mopping up financial for children

suffering from AIDS, polio.

Stressing the need for setting up of a rehabilitation centres for the " innocent "

HIV and AIDS infected children, he urged the affluent sections to liberally come

forward to help the less fortunate sections of the society.

State industries minister Elamaram Kareem were among those who addressed the

gathering.
