Guest guest
Refusal of " Dialysis for HIV+ " , claiming lives in Kolkata Dear forum, Yesterday, I have lost one of my friend Late Sri Shyamal Mitra, with the cause of death due to " Acute Renal Failure " as written in his " Death Certificate " . He was on 2nd line ART and was aadmitted in STM(School Of Tropical Medicine), Kolkata on 8th of Jan'10 to seek indoor treatment under Dr. S. K Guha and referred to SSKM Hospital(Govt.) for " Dialysis " on 23rd of Jan as there is no provision for " Dialysis in STM , but the specific machine was " Out of Order " as per the written information from SSKM Authority. Then, again on the same day i.e. 23rd Jan Dr. Guha again reffred to " Health Point Nursing Home " , Padmapukur, Kolkata and they also denied as they don't provide " Dialysys " to " HIV+ " . After that his family members ran pillar to post throughout Kolkata to all other Givt. and Pvt. Health setups, but got only refusal . refusal and refusal! Ultimately our friend left us on 27th Jan'10 early in the morning due to " Acute Renal Failure " with ever awaiting " Dialiysis " for him. So, what NACO, WBSACS and PLWH Networks have learnt from this case study ? That still today they failed to prove their claim about " Universal Access " in reality except trumpeting. Why can't we create some emergency mechanism through SACS intervention in such cases, which could be streamlined right from the treating hospitals like STM or others to get readof such Denial or refusal of Treatment just bypassing " Social Stigma " even in Government Hospitals. Thanking you, In solidarity, Snehansu Bhaduri, Kolkata Mob:9874693613 snehansu.bhaduri@...
