Guest guest Posted September 4, 2010 Report Share Posted September 4, 2010 Position Vacant: Social Scientist (Senior Research Fellow) Organization Name: Public Health Foundation Of India (PHFI), South Asia Network for Chronic Disease Organisation Profile:- Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI), an autonomous public private partnership, is India's largest initiative to strengthen the Indian public health system. It was launched by the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh on March 28, 2006 and is led by an engaged Governing Board comprising of eminent leaders from academia, industry, civil society and government. PHFI is working towards the establishment of 8-10 Indian Institutes of Public Health (IIPHs). IIPH-Hyderabad, IIPH-Gandhinagar and IIPH-Delhi have been established and provide short courses and diploma courses relevant to public health. The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is an international centre of excellence in public health and tropical medicine. It is one of Europe's leading postgraduate medical institutions and is Britain's national school of public health. Both European and developing country concerns are underlined by the School's expertise in epidemiology, preventive medicine, and disease control. Wellcome Trust (WT) has awarded a £4.5 Million grant to London School of Hygiene and PHFI for setting up a Centre for Chronic Disease Research based in New Delhi over the next five years. The Centre comprises a network of existing research groups led by University of London investigators and Indian partner organizations in Mumbai, Goa, Chennai and Pondicherry. The Network conducts research on the causes, prevention and management of common chronic diseases and currently has 16 staff based in its central office in Green Park, New Delhi. Job Description / Responsibilities: A social scientist with qualitative research expertise is required to work on specific projects in the Network. The post-holder will work under the direction of the Network Director and will work collaboratively with researchers and network partners supporting social science aspects of the design, implementation and analysis of studies. The post-holder is also expected to develop his/her own research as it relates to chronic diseases. The appointee will be expected to contribute to grant applications, design field studies, analyse primary and secondary data sources, contribute to writing scientific papers and present at national and international scientific meetings. Specifically, (s)he will be responsible for: Research - Design, analysis and interpretation of qualitative data in the context of epidemiological and health service research studies - Carrying out in-depth interviewing, focus group discussions, non-participant observational techniques, content analysis and interpretation of qualitative data - Training and supervising field researchers conducing qualitative studies in rural and urban settings - Develop a research agenda focused on the social sciences as it relates to chronic diseases in India - Liaison with other researchers in the Chronic Disease network, nationally and internationally - Writing scientific papers, reports and grant applications - Supervising research students - Organising national and international research meetings Teaching - Undertaking appropriate training in teaching methods - Providing co-supervision for Diploma and Masters level students - Contribute to design and implementation of courses in basic and advanced qualitative methods statistics for post-graduate students and short courses - organize journal club discussions around social science-based research Desired profile of the candidate : - A PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g. social sciences applied to medicine, medical anthropology) - Experience of conducting health-related research - Experience of preparing reports, scientific papers, presentations and grant applications - Publications in peer-reviewed journals commensurate with years in research - Excellent communication and writing skills - Ability to work well as part of a team and independently.
