BHUBANESWAR | Saturday, August 21, 2010 | Email | Print | | Back HIV positive delivers baby boyPNS | BalangirIt is common to find reports of HIV positive people facing stigma and discrimination in the society. This happens more with HIV positive women and even more with infected pregnant women. Fearing spread of infection due to lack of knowledge about HIV/AIDS, even hospital authorities

refuse to admit pregnant women. But a pregnant HIV positive woman, Laxmidhar Sahu of Tureikela block was admitted in Kantabanji hospital on Wednesday and delivered a baby. While taking her to the labour room, we found her to be HIV positive and immediately took all preventive measures, said a hospital staff. A medical team led by Dr Sebak Meher, Dr Sadananda Mohanty, Swarnalata Mohapatra and Jagdish Sindhul did the operation and the woman gave birth to a baby boy weighing 2.6 kg, said Sadananda Mohanty. The woman and her child were given Nevirapine, a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) used to treat HIV-1 infection and AIDS. Shravani Patnaik counseled the infected woman. When Nevirapine is administered to HIV positive pregnant women before childbirth, it reduces the chance of HIV transmission to the child. The same drug is again given to the newborn for protection against HIV infection, she said. Her husband is also HIV

positive, she said. On June 4 this year, another HIV pregnant woman, Prathama (name changed) also delivered a baby at Titlagarh sub-divisional hospital after a medical team led by Dr KC Patel, Dr Sujata Das, Sanjiv Rana and Sushma did the operation. Link worker Tankdhar Rana motivated the woman to go for safe delivery and counselor Pramod Kumar Panda administered Nevirapine to the child. According to reports, the child is healthy and normal. The medical personnel here have been given training to handle such HIV positive cases, besides maintaining the confidentiality of HIV affected persons. We would request people to approach us to ensure safe delivery, said CDMO Dr PC Sahu while complimenting the medical personnel for discharging their duties successfully.
