Guest guest
HAART Protect Breastfed Babies from HIV In a recent study, 99 percent of women who took AIDS-fighting medications prevented spreading HIV to their child. The risk of transmitting HIV to an unborn child during pregnancy is very high. A woman infected with HIV can transmit the disease to her child during pregnancy, labor, delivery, and through breastfeeding. A study performed at Harvard University compared the repression of the mother's HIV virus at delivery and throughout breastfeeding. Overall, the study tested 730 HIV-infected pregnant women. These women started HAART (highly active antiretroviral therapy) in the third trimester of pregnancy. Nearly all the women suppressed the virus by delivery, and the virus still remained suppressed during breastfeeding. " The mother-to-child transmission rate in the study was 1.1 percent when the infants were breastfed to age 6 months.†Reduced cost of 2nd line (Boosted PI ) in India (Between Rs 2200 to 2600 per month) has made it possible for pregnant women whose CD4 is more than 250 ( Nevirapine should not to be given) to suppress the viral load fast when combined with 2 NRTIs.
