Guest guest
Dear all, I do not know whether Powerpoint presentations are effective while working with school children. YDA: Centre for Youth Development and Activites (Pune) has developed a good six module program through participatory training called TARANG ( Training Adolescents of Reproductive health and Gender). It is a participatory, peer training done by youth themeslves which has wide acceptance among the adolescents in terms of asking questions as well as clarifying doubts. Powever Point presentation through statistics may not make any sense to the school children. Guest guest
Dear All, Sexual and Reproductive Health is a major component of adolescent education related to HIV which certainly needs a space where the youth would be able to discuss their personal issues. Since some of these issues are very sensitive it needs a participatory space. PPP may not serve the purpose because of its one way nature and very little scope for participation. The education package should be peer specific. With warm regards, Nandi Kishor Sandh 9337696007 (M) e-mail: <nandi2006s@...>
Guest guest
Dear Mr. Sandh, First let me introduce myself, I am Sayantani from banglanatak dot com. As an organisation we have been involved with social communication using theatre based methodology for the last 10 years across the country. You can find more details on our work at www.banglanatak.com. About the concern you have raised, I couldn't agree more with you. This is a sensitive subject, and whats crucial to the broad objective is to maintain the essence of empowerment through information for which we need to make the whole process interactive, participative so that it encourages adolescents to seek information from proper sources. In December 2009, we organised and hosted a youth festival at Delhi on behalf of UNFPA which was named 'UMANG 2009'. About 400 adolescents and their teachers from around 21 schools across the country participated in the 3 days residential festival at Delhi. The broad objective was to get direct feedback from the adolescents for evaluating the Life Skill based Sexual Reproductive Health program that UNFPA runs through the school curriculums. We had designed a series of activities over the 3 days where we had debate, elocution, painting, mask making, plays and their was a mandatory theatre based life skills development workshop. What was interesting to observe was the enthusiastic participation from the students of course, particularly so from the vernacular medium students who found the whole experience very empowering, even more so was the involvement of the teachers where they demanded a workshop to be conducted only for their own skill development. The various theatre based exercises and games undertaken to address specific communication and life skill issues, the teachers felt it was very innovative to make their communication with their students more interesting and effective rather than conventional, one way classroom mode. So, as a strategy, it was found very effective. Many organisations, have activity oriented manual designed to disseminate information on the issue in effective ways. But, what is important and crucial is perhaps to give innovative ideas, strategies and tools to the teachers presenting the curriculum as well as activities designed to facilitate interactions between the adolescents on the issue. We found our experience of UMANG and other projects where we have used similar strategy and methodology at the grassroots with villagers, ASHA, AWW etc. very effective and enriching as it is entirely based on 'Learning by Doing'. Guest guest
Dear All, I have been one of those silent members of the group so far. I am Dr. Veenapani, freelance trainer, visiting faculty in B-schools and a researcher. I would like to state here that for school education, the key criteria is teachers who need training to get over there own baggages and inhibitions. Most often tools are used to hide behind rather than to communicate the issue with the children. So I hope there are suggestions from the group on training a very important link in the whole process. The school teacher who passes the information scientifically sprinkled with his/her own dash of morality. Warm regards.
