Featured video: Rural Women Forced Into Prostitution

This video, shot by IndiaUnheard CC Gunjan Singh, is the first report on women

from a village in Uttar Pradesh state who are forced into prostitution by their

male relatives. Young women are also sent to brothels around Asia by men here

who live off the earnings of the women.

This village of 50 families has literally no young women as all of them have

been sold off into prostitution rings, and the trade has been going on in the

village for several decades. It was difficult for our Community Correspondent to

shoot the video because of the hostility from men who were afraid of losing

their income if the story got out and the authorities cracked down.

But Gunjan managed to make contact with some of the older women who are

currently trying to stop prostitution. These women were eager to finally share

their stories and have this crime against women documented.

Gunjan's video published on Video Volunteers' IndiaUnheard, Blip TV and Facebook

pages, has been drawing hundreds of visitors who express shock and disbelief.

Blip TV featured this video on it's homepage, while over three thousand watched

on our IndiaUnheard site. The number continues to grow.
