Guest guest
Indian Government Set to Cancel HIV+ Kids Programme Rasik Sharma on Fri, 11/12/2010 A programme that targets HIV+ children is facing cancellation after its global funding agencies decided to pull the plug. The progamme, which was being implemented by Chaha, an NGO, was structured along the strategic priorities of India's National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO). The programme was launched in July 2007 with the goal of improving the welfare of 64,000 children through such provisions as shelter, education and household generation. Though it has only managed to reach 59,500, Chaha reports that they are moving at a good pace and that they expect to achieve their target within two months. The NGO claims that that the programme's cancellation will mean thousands of children remaining unreached. It will also affect those who have received treatment. Chaha has decided to organise a protest-meeting with the Government, in which it will request the extension of the programme or suggest alternative routes for funding. The event will be attended by Government representatives from NACO, UNICEF representatives and civil society organisations. " The Government is silent about the kids suffering from HIV/AIDS. From this platform we want to attract their attention toward these kids " , said Romee Hijam, the Programme Coordinator of Plan India, one of the NGOs participating event http://topnews.co.uk/216593-indian-government-set-cancel-hiv-kids-programme
