Guest guest
Jan definitely has leukemia (AML). It's hard to see today when she is home, cheerful, looking wonderful, and just tires easily. Still the prognosis is that if we do nothing, she has only a few months with us. Tomorrow she sees the oncologist and probably will go into the hospital on Tuesday for the strong chemotherapy which will quickly reduce her immune system to zero. She will then have three to six weeks in medical isolation and hopefully will go into remission (not a cure). The slim hope for a cure is with a bone marrow transplant on the possibility that either of her brothers is a match (25% chance for each). This treatment is very risky, but there is no alternative as we know what is the outcome of no treatment.. Jan has been in on the discussions and in is aware that she needs to go back to the hospital and will be very sick there. She's holding up perhaps better than I am. So we're enjoying the days now. She's downstars watching 'Sister Act' with her grandmother and helped me rake the front yard yesterday (for money, of course). Her younger brother came back from California for the weekend on some of my frequent flyer miles. I expect to be pretty quiet for a while (perhaps go 'nomail') and there will be little immediate news (hopefully). Before I go completely, I'll rebuild her website with some new pictures. I'll give you the URL when its done. Rick

Guest guest
Rick, I'm sorry to hear of this. Jan is such a trooper that I am sure she will be holding up more than mom and dad. I know she will be going through so much with the chemo and my heart just breaks for her. I'll pray that one of her brothers is a perfect match for the bone marrow and also to give your family stength in the next several months. Rick, if you go on no mail status, please do keep us updated. Enjoy the good days and have faith that there will be more in the future! Drop a line to Terri Kunze (Terri@...) if you need to. Her daughter has gone through 2 rounds of treatment and Terri's strength just amazed me. Take Care...and.... Guest guest
Oh Rick!! I'm so sorry to hear this. If there is anything I can do.... I really mean this. This is not an idle statement. You and your family will be in my prayers. Jan seems like such a wonderful young woman. I have so enjoyed reading about her experiences and will continue to do so. Guest guest
thanks for the tips! Jan, you could have him practice ths technique with orange flavored tic-tacs...... Pattie Jan Hi Jan, My Uncle taught us this trick (he was a Ped) and I had to teach it to my brother when he was in medical school--apparently he didn't know how to swallow pills, and needed to teach kids on his Ped rounds. I pretty much hold it over his head to this day! Just make sure the pill is under the tongue, then sip water and swallow. No gag, and usually much less medicine taste. Sometimes, when it comes to swallowing capsules, tilting the chin down actually helps the capsule float to the back of the throat. Good luck, and let me know how it goes. This has worked well for myself and my two kids. Luckily for , since he's a PID kid who hates liquid meds! Sandi

Guest guest
Jan, So glad you found the information useful--I love that book. I'm planning to loan it to a friend of my sister who just got out of the hospital. She has perfect cholesterol yet had a heart attack two weeks ago. She's the example of the dr in the book. Scary, isn't it?
