Hi RA,

Sammons Preston is a catalog of medical equipment that the OTs (I am

an occupational therapist) and physical therapists in my office use. They are

online but I'm not sure if you need to be a professional (license number) in

order to purchase.

When I go into work tomorrow, I will look for other catalogs that

may be of help to you and offer equipment for purchase by civilians :)

PS When you are in rehab, before you leave the hospital, the OT or PT

staff will most likely work with you on any equipment you may need.

You might want to check this out with the hospital or Dr. before you

buy.

Good Luck and good health

I hope the best for you, RA. My own comments on the reaching device would mirror

the one you received about OT's during rehab, checking the hospital before you

buy, etc.

RA, I had my hip replacement a little over two years ago now. The PT

department provided me with the following equipment for home use

before discharge:

a reaching aid

a device enabling me to put on my own socks without bending over

a very long-handled shoehorn to enable me to slide on my shoes

without bending over

a very long handled bath scrubber so that I could wash my feet and

legs without having to bend over

and

crutches (but within a week or so I was able to return to using my

cane, and within 3 weeks I was walking unassisted.)

What I do recommend you obtain on your own are:

an elevated toilet seat

and

a bath chair or bench for your bath/shower.

PT did not provide me with those, and I found them necessary. Luckily

I had obtained both beforehand.

Yep. I don't know what the name of it is (and it certainly is odd

looking; sort of like a plastic " half-pipe " with ropes attached to one

end. You slide a sock over the opposite end, take a rope in each hand,

and slide your foot into the deivce and sock, after which you gently

pull on the ropes. The device slides out of the sock, and your foot

stays in the sock), and I don't know where it might be obtained from,

but as I said, when I was discharged from the hospital after my hip

replacement, that was one of the items the PT sent home with me.

There is a catalog with items to help people with different medical

needs. It is Dr. Leonards. This catalog has some of the coolest ideas

to make life easier. My Grandmother used to get it and I would thumb

through it just for fun before I had PA.
