Guest guest
Hi Chip, Just a few years ago I sought out a physician here in Boston who I had learned had done a very small study with some others about the use of Vitamin D for the treatment of PA. I sought him out to see if he would agree to take me in as a PA patient with a Vitamin D regimen, and he did. I took over an extended time about as close to the maximum that you are allowed. It unfortunately didn't help me (while it had been quite useful to the majority in the small study), either the PA or the psoriasis component separately. The doctor's name is Holick. He is essentially thought of as " the father of Vitamin D " in the U.S. You can Google him easily. He has a book out, or shortly, called The Vitamin D Solution. Knowing him, it would be worth the read. To give you a further sense of how he practices, when I went in for my first appointment and before ever seeing the man, the nurses had me go in for a bone scan. I thought they mistook me for some other patient. No. Holick routinely has patients have a bone scan. And, the scan revealed that I had, and have, severe osteoporosis. As a result, I have stayed on as his patient, now over 3 years, taking a regimen of Vitamin D, and plenty of calcium daily. I take 50,000 units of D every two weeks in a single prescription capsule. I seem to tolerate it well, I'm sure partly because I am deficient in D. If I have any luck, maybe there are to be other benefits, as you probably know that D is being studied furiously now. It has been very useful in helping to stabilize my osteoporosis. It has not helped the psoriasis, though neither of us expected it to, I don't think, because of the first go-round with it when PA was the target. I hope this is useful to you somehow. And thanks for the reference. Don Boston
Guest guest
Thanks for sharing this info. I am from MN but live in Ontario, yes Canada, and just seeing a specialist took years. Any information that people share here is very important to me! Thanks! Susie
Guest guest
Dan, Thanks for the info. In my research of the archives I came across your posts, including those re: Dr. Holick and your treatment. I wasn't sure you were still active on the group. I will look for Holick's book. So is he claiming that he has had some success treating PA patients with vitamin D?
