Guest guest
Flagyl is used for Giardia.....but I wonder if it might also work on a sub acute C. Difficile infection, or if the Flagyl affects the motility of the B. Burgdorferi by its action on a flagellar protein? If it works..it works... thats my attitude.... let the wizards figure out why or how it works later. <g>

Guest guest
Hi everyone, I don't know about flagyl, it helped with my postsurgical infection, but not my Lyme. I was so ill and near to death, though I couldn't tell you what it did. Connie

I was on Flagyl from 4/1 to 4/21, at 750 mg three times per day. I found out about two weeks into it that that was WAY too much -- about double what I should have been taking. About four days after I started the dosage, my hair started to fall out. At first it was subtle, then more dramatic. It hasn't let up yet, and my new Lyme doc told me that basically what I did was put my hair into a die-off phase, similar to what happens during chemo. She told me it will fall out for a total of about 3 months and then grow back. I have very thick, shoulder-length dark brown hair. I used to be able to wrap a rubber band around my ponytail only twice -- now it goes around easily 3 times. It's getting visibly thin now and I'm contemplating getting it cut short so it won't be so pathetic looking. The doctor told me that it will probably all fall out before any grows back. For what it's worth, she doesn't like Flagyl except as a drug of last resort, when every combo of orals, IM injections and IV have either been tried or are not available. She said there are too many side-effects from Flagyl to make it worthwhile except as a last-ditch med. I too had very high hopes for Flagyl when I was on it, but it really didn't seem to help my symptoms much. Right now I'm on Biaxin and Ceftin and it seems to be making me herx like crazy. Guest guest
There is a lot of information on the sci.med.diseases.lyme newsgroup about flagyl or you can get into the newsgroup's archives by going to www.deja.com. Flagyl is still just experimental with Lyme, although it is an antibiotic that has been around for a long time. It is now being used experimentally along with other antibiotics. The, theory, and the scientist who is recommending it says it's still theory, is that flagyl kills the cyst form of the disease while other antibiotics kill the motile forms. He thinks that using both kinds of antibiotics at once, therefore, leave the spirochetes nowhere to hide. Many people on the newsgroup with chronic Lyme have been getting good results with this. The herxes, however, seem to be intense. Ellen
Guest guest
Re: Flagyl Flagyl is not only an antibiotic but also an antihelminitic which means it kills intestinal worms and it is also an anti-protozoal which means it might also have a weakening effect on babesia microti. It has fewer widespread side effects than Biaxin but has been known to be tough on the liver specifically. Dr. Atkisson Barr told me that herxing on this medication can indeed be rough. I am taking 1,200 mgs. per day along with 2 grams daily of IV Rocephin. Dr. Barr recommended that I start out with half that dose for one week and gradually add more. What is great about Flagyl is that it penetrates the blood brain barrier and gets deep into tissues and the brain. You need to take it on a really full stomach to protect your gi tract. I hope I last long on this med because I am allergic to most of the others except cephlasporins . With continued high doses , rare side effects include seizures and this is probably a result of its effect on the liver. I am using pancreatic glandulars and organic coffee enemas to help rid my blood stream of endotoxins as I go through these treatments. Already , I have noticed a good effect from them but I have no idea how I will hold up once the IV Rocephin starts next week. I'll let you know. I chose Flagyl because Biaxin will cause pancytopenias including platelet destruction and I already have a platelet loss due to an autoimmune disease. I have high hopes for Flagyl. As for weakness, my doctor gives me an injection of low dose anabolic steroids to modify my pre-existing muscle weakness. He knew the herxes would be too much on top of the fact that I am 80% disabled from lack of strong hip flexors and deterioration in the tendons. Courage to all, Cheryl

Guest guest
What other antibiotics have been used with Flagyl? I've been on Flagyl for six months or so and haven't experienced anything I would call herxing much less intense herxing. I go to my LLMD on Monday and would like to have some names of antibiotics to ask about. Thanks, On Sat, 11 Sep 1999 12:01:08 -0400 (EDT) ellenlu@... (Ellen Lubarsky) writes: >From: ellenlu@... Guest guest
Hi everyone, I just got on this list last night and just in time it looks like. I have wrote the fellow lymie here in Oklahoma and hope that in some way I can help him but at this time there isn't any lyme literate doctors I know of in Oklahoma. His best bet is the one I see in Kansas City, MO or one of the ones in Texas. Oklahoma is still trying to deny a problem with Lyme. I try to educate as much as I can but most wont even listen. It's sad too. I know many have lyme but are just diagnosed with other things. Seems like half the town here has either MS, Fibro, Lupus, or Chronic Fatigue. I have grown tired of trying to help them and having them think I am nuts. Anyway, hello from Oklahoma and I hope I can help in some way. , I did the Flagyl also and I did it with Suprax. I took 500mg 3 times a day of Flagyl along with Suprax 400mg two times a day. I had already done 15 months of Doxycycline and didn't notice any big herxes there either. I was so sick when I started the Doxy that I may not have been able to tell the herx from just plain feeling like I was going to die in the beginning anyway. I didn't notice any big herxes on any of them I just gradually felt better but it did take a long time to make the progress I have made. I think just some people herx really bad and others don't. I was told once it depended on how bad your immune system was if you have really bad herxes. Just a guess here for me but mine seems to be doing ok and maybe thats why I don't get really bad herxes. I am at this point 98% my old self and hoping for no relapses. Janis
