Guest guest
My 10yo daughter is having a terrible time with her antibiotics. We took her off the " offending " antibiotic 2 weeks ago and this past Monday began her on a new med hoping that her intestinal issues would resolve. She did get better but now after only 1 week on her new antibiotic she is having difficulty again. I'm wondering if the probiotic I'm giving her may not be good enough. I've been giving her Garden of Life Primal Defense Kids because it has the probiotic as well as saccharomyces. I'm using the adult version with great success so far. Any other recommendations would be very helpful.
Guest guest
Garden of Life is a good brand. Maybe she needs to switch brands/strains for a while? Maybe she's not getting enough probiotics for that particular dose or frequency of antibiotic? Maybe she is getting the probiotics too close to the dose of antibiotics (abx), and the abx are killing off the probiotics. To avoid problems with this, our doc always says to give probiotics about 2-3 hours after you give the abx. I don't know if there are any " enteric coated " probiotics safe for children, but I take these. The enteric coating helps the probiotics to survive stomach acid and actually make it into the intestines where they really need to get to. Jarrow makes an enteric coated version called Jarro-dophilus EPS, and so does NOW Foods called GR8 Dophilus. You can do a search for these on line or maybe find them in your health food store. Ask your LLMD for guidance, and report any problems to him/her. Hope this helps some. Christa [ ] Probiotic Recommendations My 10yo daughter is having a terrible time with her antibiotics. Guest guest
Hi for normal people on abx the suggestions that have come through work ok. For those of us who have difficulty with our gut tolerating abx we need something much more powerful (and remember, the worst side effect of abx is the c.difficile infection of the gut which can be fatal, but which is prevented by good probiotics). My daughter & I don't tolerate abx well on our gastro system unless we are taking a very powerful probiotic 2 hours after abx (don't take them at the same time, it isn't effective). The two that I would recommend a lot are VSL-3 - very good, but VERY expensive & my favourite Restore Probiotic which you can find here http://shop.restormedicine.com/Restor-Probiotic-Formula-PRO1.htm I found the restore one to be better, and cheaper, as you only need to take a tiny bit (both Restore & VSL-3 have 450billion organisms across a number of different strains). Hope this helps Nikki > > Thank you for those recommendations and questions! I think I will try to > increase her dose of probiotic and see if that helps.
