Guest guest
from Dale, Mom to Katy, CVID, age 20 , and all those interested in flu shots. Flu mist is an absolute NO-NO for our kids as it is live-virus. But the flu shot is actually recommended for most of them. The reason is as follows: It seems that even though our kids are lacking in building permanent antibodies, there is some evidence that they build something that gives them a little temporary protection either through the B-cells or possibly T-cells. And because flu-shots are needed for a particular season and therefore not usually included in the IVIG that they are receiving - they have no protection to the current bugs. So... because flu shots are not harmful (FOR MOST OF OUR POPULATION -- always talk to your doctor before deciding!!!) and there's indication of temporary immunity, our immunologist and pediatrician have always recommended flu shots for Katy. IDF also supports flu shots for most of our CVID'ers and low IgA patients. I'm not sure about those with T-cell involvement. Some people take a flu shot at least twice during flu season -- seems like early October and again in January. We don't do that -- but might consider it if the flu season lasts longer than usual. Actually, now that Katy is in college -- she doesn't bother with the flu shots --- ARGH!!! Hope that helps. How's doing? Guest guest
It is my understanding that each year the flu shot is a little different -- there are many different strains and each year they try to predict what strains will be going around and base the vaccine on those. Also, I believe the abs you make to the flu vaccine are not permanent, hence, everybody gets a new shot every year. always gets two flu shots, one right away and one a month or two later, so Sept & November or October & December if I didn't have my act together. Everyone in our family gets a shot to try to keep flu out of our house. DH and I get ours at Walgreen's or a grocery store, kids get theirs at the peds. I think I saw a news story that there will be a shortage again this year, so keep your ears to the ground to get them early!!! Our immuno and ped said that everyone in our house is considered to be on the " A " list to get flu shots first in the event of a shortage, due to 's PID. Keep that in mind when you are calling if needed. has always gotten 2 shots and has never had the flu! Kate (non-PID) got it last year badly enough to need Tamiflu. (mom to , age 5-1/2, dairy intolerant-related GERD -- currently has polysaccharide antibody def, previously had transient IgG, IgA, t-cell & other defs... and also to Kate, born 9/19/02, dairy intolerant)

Guest guest
Hi Jacqui, I'm brand new to this group but detoxing is something I have some experience with. If possible, I would try the religious exemption or maybe you have a doctor that would be willing to write a note explaining that you had a prior reaction to a flu shot. If not, lots of peopole are using homeopathy for all sorts of detox, including heavy metals. There is a group called " homeodetox-talk " . The site is primarily concerned with detoxing autistic children but lots of parents on the site go through the process as well. The moderator is Coyle. She could probably recommend something for you to take after the shot and could arrange to have it shipped to you. Hope that helps. Guest guest
knowing what you know and then allowing yourself to get the shot, and then going through detox is pure insanity find a lawyer, use the religious exemption or find a sympathetic doctor who will bend the truth and vouch that you had a previous allergic reaction thimerosol is not something to play around with also i think there are some non-thimerosol vaccines. i still wouldnt go near that stuff but it's probably better than getting a dose of mercury. I work at a hospital in Seattle that is making in mandatory to get the flu shot this year and every year for every single emplyee. People who have an allergic reaction or for religious reasons are exempt. The institution stated in a meeting yesterday that if people refuse they will be terminated. I know that all flu shots have thermisol in them...how can I detox my body once I have the shot? Guest guest
Me neither. People can get very sick from flu shots, and besides, there's ample evidence that they don't even protect against flu. Flu mutates very rapidly. AVOID THAT SHOT! > Hi........there is NO WAY that I would get that shot..........Job be damned..........this is YOUR health you are talking about....once it is gone it may be difficult to get back. Guest guest
Hi Jacqui. I agree with Art. Get a lawyer. This is unconstitutional. The hospital knows that the flu vaccine they are going to give you is from last years flu and not effective against this years flu. I know it is a profoundly stressful thing to take a stand, but his is just wrong. Much compassion for your situation. Guest guest
Yes, definitely get the flu shot! You should also get vaccinated for Hep B and Hep A. And, get vaccinated for pneumonia too. The vaccine is made of dead virus' so you can't get the flu from it, although some claim that they do. My personal thoughts on getting the shot is that our bodies are already in a fight and under stress which puts us in the position of catching almost anything that is going around. The flu shot really helps me. I can't believe I haven't had a cold or the flu since I've been getting them, and I used get the flu and/or bronchitis every year before then. We can't afford to not get vaccinated against everything that we could be very susceptible to. What may make a 'regular' person ill, could be almost deadly for us heppers. Go for it girl! Guest guest
I did my first flu shot last year while in treatment. Although I've never had the flu (knock on wood), I felt that with my immune system fighting the virus and thus comprimised, it wouldn't hurt to get a flu shot to be on the safe side. I didn't have any reaction to the shot and even though exposed to people with flu in the office, I never got it. flu shot Does anyone on here get the flu shot? Since my white counts are always a little low I was wondering about getting one. My doc said he didn't have a clue (gives me great faith in him ) and that I should call the 1-800 number which I did. They said that usually they suggest it, but you should get your docs ok. So, I suppose I am on my own with this decision. Any suggestions out there? Why would I NOT get one? <><TammieD><>

Guest guest
As soon as we found out I had Hep C, both my primary care physician and my hepatologist prescribed a flu shot. And the pcp wondered if I should get the pneumo-something shot for pneumonia. Then I lost my medical insurance so I never found out if I should have that shot or not. This year I will go to a flu shot clinic and continue to get one. It will cost $15. I have never had the flu. And I don't want it! Guest guest
Hi . . . .this flu shot rationing is not really anything new. I can remember for the lasts several years that there has been a report that we were going to be short on the vaccine. I believe that in the year 2000, when I worked for a doctor's office we were only giving the shots to people over 65, people with chronic illnesses and health care workers. I have taken a flu shot every year that I have been a nurse and if they are offering them at my work this year I will take one . . . if not, I really don't think it will be any big deal . . . . Guest guest
I had a hard time with this decision because I didn't want to take a shot from someone who needed it more. I got it today, MAINLY because my iron is so low that getting over the flu could be a real issue. The nurse assured me that she thought I was EXACTLY the person who should take it. I don't think it was because of the by-pass as much as because of the anemia. My PCP had me on the at risk list...he said, I was LOW, high risk...how do you like that...ie, it isn't going to kill you but you ARE going to be very, very sick, he said...I agree, it is a hard decision. My 79 year old mother is diabetic and asmathic and allergic to the vaccine and one of my concerns is always that we might give it to her... Flu shot I just saw a news story in the Atlanta area concerning the flu shot and the fact that some areas are voluntarily giving the shot to only the high risk individuals while others are giving it to anybody that wants it. They are calling for voluntary rationing of the vaccine. Since the staff at CLOS has said that we are at no greater risk to get the flu than anyone else (and admitting that I have never gotten a flu shot before anyway) I just wanted to say that I am going to continue what I have done in the past and take my chances. The story I saw once again urged that only those at the highest risk for complications from the flu take the shot. It also reinforced that there are several medicines out there to treat the flu early if you happen to get it. I am in no way trying to telling anyone else what do do but I would rather " my shot " figuratively go to a high risk individual. in GA
