Guest guest
It depends on the state you live, and how difficult they are. My son had a neuropsych done by a reputable doctor , paid for by the school, but I would have preferred to have chosen another doctor. If I want him to have another I have to pay myself. Best of luck Judy ________________________________ From: <jenuhferr@...> Sent: Tue, November 23, 2010 10:34:25 AM Subject: [ ] Neuropsych evals for school  Can anyone tell me what they did to get a neuropsych evaluation done by a doctor of their choice and have the district pay for it? Dr. J says we really need to see this guy in NYC but we would have to get the district to pay for it. Anyone have any experience and tips on how to do this or even any other testing? My daughter, I think, might lose her autism diagnosis soon so her services will have to be based on evals like this... Guest guest
I went to Dr.J yesterday and was told the same thing, he even talked to the school, called central admin. and he is writing a letter to the district so we'll see what happens, I called the 2 drs. in NYC and I was told the price for the eval. is $4200.00.....The reason for these 2 drs. is because they specialize in this disease, he has to add that to the letter he's writing to the school. Guest guest
We had two children who had neuropsych evaluations done for school. My daughter had it repeated twice. We found our own neuropsychologist and she did not do the complete battery that many do, but concentrated on the areas where the problems were noted. The evaluation only lasted for 3-5 hours and cost $600 which our insurance paid for. Every doctor we have seen, Dr. J. included, were very impressed with the results and the school found them to be just what they needed to approve accommodations. I mention this because we were able to get what was needed without the lengthly, exhausting and expensive evaluation that many go through. We spoke to her about the illness, the problems that were commonly seen and our kids issues, and she tailored the tests to those areas. She would have added more but found these gave her a solid foundations of issues to justify accommodations. She noted memory issues, the fact that my daughter was a very visual learner, and also an odd word finding issue only when writing and usually with unfamiliar material. Due to the fatigue and brain fog which she explained as the same as Traumatic Brain Injury, she was able to help us get extended time on testing and assignments, reduced workload and a few other things that helped our daughter tremendously. Dr. even added the dx of TBI to her list as it was illness induced he said. I hope this helps. It is another way to go. Guest guest
What I was suggesting was meeting with some evaluators who may be close to your home and cheaper. By meeting with this doctor and talking to her first, we decided she could offer us what we needed. And if she hadn't we were only out $600, not thousands, (had insurance not covered it.) I think sometimes I can get so hung up on finding people that understand the illness that I miss the fact that there IS brain dysfunction going on. And someone who is openminded and willing to know what areas to look at, should be able to get you just the results you need. We knew someone who worked with special ed kids at our school and she actually referred us to this person to do a private evaluation. I would also have considered calling any local advocacy centers, disability services or advocates to see if they had any suggestions. The issues in Lyme are very similar to those found in Traumatic Brain Injury so you can could mention that when looking. Just an idea anyways. It worked out well for us. I know not everyone would be a fit, but there are some out there that I think would be. Good Luck, Z
Guest guest
Thanks so much for all the opinions and experiences on this. I think it will be helpful. I guess I'll try to go Dr. J's route (didn't know he would do all that to get it through the district) and if that doesn't work I'll try to find an openminded doc to help. I just hate docs so much and doc shopping!! Jen Lymie parents, 5yo Lymie/Aspie
